Early Saturday morning, the Oregon coast woke up to a heavy and sobering sight.
A 46-foot fin whale washed ashore just north of Sunset Beach Recreation Site, near Warrenton, sometime around 6:30 a.m. According to Seaside Aquarium, the whale had actually been on people’s radar for a few days after it was spotted floating offshore near Cape Falcon.
By Saturday morning, it had drifted in and come to rest on the sand.
Right now, there are still more questions than answers. Aquarium staff say the whale’s sex hasn’t been determined, and the cause of death is unknown. A necropsy is being scheduled to hopefully shed some light on what happened, though that process can take time and doesn’t always give clear conclusions.
In the meantime, the aquarium is reminding beachgoers to admire from a distance. As awe-inspiring as a creature this size is, touching is a hard no. Whales, dolphins, porpoises, and seals can all carry diseases that can be passed to people and pets, even after death. So look, take photos if you must, but give it space.
It’s one of those moments that stops you mid-scroll and mid-walk alike. Massive, quiet, and strangely humbling. Just another reminder that the Oregon coast, as beautiful as it is, can also be a place where nature shows up in ways that feel both incredible and heavy all at once.
