There are places in Oregon that feel like destinations.

And then there are places that feel like adventures.

The kind where you arrive with a rough plan, only to completely abandon it an hour later because you suddenly find yourself wandering hallways, peeking around corners, and wondering if that strange little door was always there.

That pretty much sums up McMenamins Old St. Francis School in Bend.

At first glance, it already sounds wonderfully odd. A former Catholic school turned hotel and entertainment destination? Very Oregon.

But then you start exploring.

You notice old school details mixed with colorful murals. Hallways twist in unexpected directions. Artwork pops up in places you aren't expecting. One room becomes another room, then another hallway, then suddenly you're asking yourself:

"Wait...where does that go?"

Because hidden somewhere inside this wonderfully strange place is one of the coolest little secrets in Oregon.

A tiny hidden bar.

And finding it feels like joining a club.

The Secret That's Half the Fun

Let's be clear here. Part of the magic is finding it yourself.

Yes, I know where it is.

Yes, I've been there.

No, I'm not going to tell you where it is.

But tucked inside Old St. Francis School is the famous Broom Closet, one of the tiniest and most delightfully weird little bars you'll ever stumble into.

And yes, it actually started life as a broom closet.

You almost can't believe it the first time you see it.

Somehow a room that absolutely should not be a bar became one anyway.

Tiny stools.

Cozy lighting.

An atmosphere that feels like a secret somebody forgot to tell you about.

The best part might be watching people discover it for the first time.

You'll see it happen.

Someone walking down a hallway suddenly pauses.

They look confused.

Then excited.

Then they disappear through the doorway.

A few minutes later they emerge grinning like they just found hidden treasure.

It's one of those perfect little "if you know, you know" experiences.

A School With A Very Different Kind Of Attendance Record

Long before travelers started hunting for hidden bars and soaking pools, Old St. Francis had a very different purpose.

Built in the 1930s, the property originally served as a Catholic school in Bend.

Students once walked these same halls carrying books and backpacks instead of craft beers and movie tickets.

It's honestly a little funny imagining classrooms where kids once worried about homework becoming places where adults now relax with pints and cocktails.

When McMenamins transformed the property in the early 2000s, they didn't erase the building's past.

They leaned into it, not unlike some of their other famous properties in Oregon like Edgefield in Troutdale, and Grand Lodge in Forest Grove.

School themes remained.

Historic character stayed.

Then they layered in murals, art, pubs, music spaces, hidden surprises, and just enough weirdness to make every visit memorable.

The result somehow feels nostalgic and completely unlike anywhere else at the same time.

The Soaking Pool Feels Like Finding Another Secret

Even if the hidden bar didn't exist, Old St. Francis would still have a pretty convincing argument for a visit.

Because then there's the soaking pool.

And this isn't your typical hotel hot tub situation.

Inside the property is an indoor soaking pool that feels less like something you'd expect to find in an old school and more like stumbling into an ancient Roman bathhouse. Warm light reflects off colorful tilework while archways and murals create an atmosphere that feels almost dreamlike.

The first time you walk in, there's a moment where your brain does a double take.

"Wait...this is inside here?"

Steam rises gently through the room as people settle into the warm water after long days exploring Bend, hiking nearby trails, skiing at Mount Bachelor, or hopping from brewery to brewery around town.

It feels cozy, quiet, and a little mysterious all at once.

Honestly, it's the kind of place where you suddenly understand why some people book a room and end up spending far more time at the hotel than they originally planned.

Because between hidden bars and Roman bathhouse vibes tucked inside an old school, this place has a habit of surprising you.

Every Corner Feels Like It Has A Story

One thing people quickly discover about Old St. Francis is that it rewards curiosity.

This isn't a place where you walk straight from your room to dinner and call it a night.

It's a place where you wander.

You find unexpected artwork.

You notice odd details hidden in murals.

You stumble into another room you didn't realize existed.

There's a movie theater, restaurants, gathering spaces, and little corners where people settle in and completely lose track of time.

Half the experience isn't actually what you're doing.

It's simply looking around.

Maybe that's really why people love places like Old St. Francis.

Because it doesn't feel polished or overly perfect.

It feels playful.

A little strange.

A little mysterious.

And full of personality.

Food, Drinks, And The Full McMenamins Experience

Of course, no McMenamins experience would be complete without food and drinks.

St. Francis has multiple places to eat and grab a drink, including cozy pubs and gathering spaces where people settle in for hours.

You'll find burgers, sandwiches, comfort food favorites, craft beer brewed by McMenamins, wine, cocktails, and all the familiar things people have come to expect from these Oregon institutions.

Nobody seems in a hurry here.

People linger.

Conversations stretch longer.

Then suddenly it's dark outside and you're heading off to find that hidden hallway everyone keeps talking about.
