Wine gets most of the attention in this part of the Willamette Valley, but there's another kind of treasure to be found here. Instead of pinot noir, this place deals in things that are millions of years older, considerably harder, and, depending on who you ask, every bit as addictive to collect.
C&H Family Jewels Rock and Lapidary is the kind of Oregon roadside stop that can turn "we'll just look around for a few minutes" into an absolute time warp of staring at rocks, flipping over specimens, and convincing yourself that yes, you absolutely do need another chunk of agate for the shelf at home. Many precious hours of drive-time to the Oregon Coast have been lost here, but you know what?
It was worth it.
And if you're a rockhound, crystal collector, amateur geologist, or simply the sort of person who can't walk past a sparkly rock without doing an "OOOOOH SHINY!", you may want to clear some room in the car.
A Rockhound Treasure Chest in the Willamette Valley
C&H Family Jewels describes itself as a rock, gem, crystal, and mineral shop near Dayton, but that description doesn't quite convey the sheer treasure-hunt appeal of the place. Their Facebook promises "a little bit of everything," while visitors repeatedly describe an enormous assortment of unusual specimens, polished stones, crystals, geodes, and minerals.
AAA's Via magazine once highlighted C&H while putting together a weekend guide to Dayton, reporting that the shop carried more than 200 varieties of rocks, like Oregon sunstone, geodes, pyrite, crystals, and other minerals.
The "Family Jewels" part of the shop name are owners Chris and Hollee McGrew, a married couple of rockhounds who make yearly field trips to go out digging.
That part explains a lot.
This isn't that ultra-posh, polished gift shop where somebody ordered a few boxes of generic crystals because they looked pretty beside the register. C&H is the kind of place assembled by people who actually get excited about rocks. There's rough material, polished material, slabs, familiar favorites, strange pieces you've probably never encountered before, and the sort of specimens that make collectors bend down for a closer look.
For serious rockhounds, that's the fun. You don't necessarily arrive knowing what you're going to buy. You wander.

If you've never fallen down the thunderegg rabbit hole, Oregon is an especially dangerous place to start.
Our official state rock can look downright ordinary from the outside, only to reveal incredible bands, pockets, colors, and patterns after it's sliced open and polished. Half the excitement is that you don't entirely know what's waiting inside, which is basically nature's version of a mystery box.
C&H's Instagram has even shown Chris cutting open a specimen to see what was hiding within, because sometimes Mother Nature delivers fireworks. Other times she apparently shrugs and says, "Well, it's still a rock."

Of course, seasoned collectors may have even more fun because they know exactly what they're looking at.
Or, perhaps more dangerously, exactly how many more things they suddenly want.

C&H isn't just about selling rocks. The lapidary side of the name refers to the art of cutting, shaping, grinding, and polishing stone, turning rough material into pieces that reveal colors and patterns you might never see from the outside.
Customers have specifically mentioned having stones and thundereggs polished or worked on here, and C&H is also listed as an Oregon dealer by LORTONE, a longtime manufacturer of rock tumblers and lapidary equipment.
For somebody who's recently discovered rock tumbling, that makes this an especially interesting stop. Several reviewers have mentioned getting advice about tumbling and talking rocks with the owners, which is considerably more useful than standing in the garage wondering why your beautiful agates have somehow emerged from the tumbler looking exactly like wet driveway gravel.
By the way, if you're considering custom cutting or polishing, it's a good idea to ask about prices and turnaround time beforehand. This process takes time to get just right, and the owners are busy folks.
Worth the Detour in Oregon's Willamette Valley
Maybe the best thing about C&H Family Jewels is where it is.
Dayton sits in the Willamette Valley, surrounded by farmland, vineyards, tasting rooms, and quiet rural backroads. A rock shop isn't necessarily what you'd expect to find out here, and that's precisely what makes it such a fun addition to a day trip.
It's an easy place to build into an afternoon of wandering around this part of the valley. Go searching for rocks, explore Dayton, grab something to eat, and then keep cruising through the surrounding countryside with a suspiciously heavy bag rattling around on the floorboard.
There isn't a traditional standalone website for the shop, but C&H does maintain both frequently updated Facebook and Instagram, where the owners post specimens, sales, Oregon rocks, new finds, and other updates.
For treasure seekers, though, scrolling through pictures probably isn't going to satisfy the itch.
Some places are meant to be browsed in person.
And somewhere on a shelf near Dayton, among the thundereggs, agates, crystals, petrified wood, polished stones, and wonderfully weird pieces of Earth's history, there may be a rock waiting for you to decide that you simply cannot leave this corner of the Willamette Valley without it.
