Brace yourself, Oregon Coast fans: the dramatic power of the ocean is about to put on a show this week with monstrous waves, stormy weather, and the rare arrival of king tides. If you've ever wanted to witness the ocean at its wildest, mark your calendar for Nov. 15, 16, and 17 — these are the days when towering tides will hit the Pacific Northwest, making the coast feel alive in an extraordinary way.

During these dates, the king tides are expected to surge up to six inches higher than the usual maximum tide levels, bringing the possibility of coastal flooding and transforming the shoreline into a tempestuous landscape. And that’s not all: starting Monday, waves measuring 22 to 28 feet are forecasted to crash along the coast, making this one of the season's most intense natural spectacles.

For anyone considering a visit to witness the raw force of the king tides, be sure to check out our article on when and where to watch the 2024 Oregon king tides for tips on the best vantage points and how to stay safe while doing it.

The National Weather Service has issued a high-surf advisory from 10 p.m. Monday to 10 p.m. Tuesday, warning of "dangerous high surf" along all southern Oregon beaches. Expect wave heights to peak at a staggering 25 to 28 feet on Tuesday morning. Conditions will remain treacherous through Tuesday evening, with waves gradually lowering to 20 to 25 feet by nightfall.

In their advisory, the National Weather Service’s Medford office urges coastal visitors to "use extreme caution near the beach." Jetties, rocks, and driftwood — usually seen as harmless parts of the coastal scene — can quickly turn perilous under such powerful surf. Make no mistake: even seasoned beachgoers should keep a respectful distance from the water’s edge as the coast transforms into a dynamic and unpredictable wonder.

If you've ever wanted to see Mother Nature flex her muscles, the Oregon Coast this week is the place to be. Just remember to enjoy the spectacle safely and keep an eye on our guide to experiencing the magic of the king tides.
