Released in 1986, Stand By Me is a coming of age tale based on the novella 'The Body' by Stephen King and brought to life on screen by director Rob Reiner. Wil Wheaton, River Phoenix, Corey Feldman, Jerry O'Connell and Kiefer Sutherland starred in the film which was nominated for several awards, including the Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay, and two Golden Globe Awards.

While the movie takes place in the fictional Oregon town of Castle Rock, parts of it were filmed in the very real Oregon town of Brownsville, just 35 minutes north of Eugene.

Brownsville has a small town idyllic charm, making it the perfect spot in 1985 to film Stand By Me. At the time of filming about 100 local residents played extras in the film. Now every year on July 23rd, Brownsville celebrates the movie and the iconic times when the story took place with Stand By Me Day. The first Stand By Me day was held in 2007 and the event has been going strong ever since.
