Fort George Brewery sits in one of the most imposing buildings in Astoria and takes up an entire city block. In addition to its award-winning beer, the brewery also serves up some of the best food in town in a welcoming, family-friendly atmosphere.
The name of the brewery dates back over 200 years to the city’s rich history with the Lewis and Clark expedition. In 1811, fur traders established the first non-native outpost on the west coast and named it Fort Astoria in honor of John Jacob Astor, a wealthy entrepreneur and investor from New York. One year later, the British tried to take it back, dubbing it “Fort George” after their king, but in the 1840s it was recaptured by the Americans and today we all know it by the name of Astoria.
Today, the Fort George brewery is in the historic Lovell Building, built in 1921 and is on the same spot (roughly) where the original fort was built. In fact, you can visit a replica of the original fort behind the brewery in a small park. Inside the sprawling brewery are three different locations where you can enjoy Fort George beer and food.
The downstairs has the largest dining room and serves their full menu where you can get burgers, sandwiches, fish and chips, poutine, wings, clam chowder, and salads. The upstairs, that’s surrounded by windows that give you a sweeping view of the city and water, serves primarily pizza and apps. The cozy Lovell Taproom only serves beer, but you can get specialty brews here that aren’t available in the other areas. And as a bonus, the incomparable Blue Scorcher Bakery is housed on the bottom floor.
Fort George beer is some of the best in the state and has won multiple awards including a recent gold in the 2024 World Beer Cup for their hazy pale “City of Dreams,” and a gold in the 2024 Oregon Beer Awards for their Short Sands lager (they also won “best Brewpub Experience”). You can find all kinds of beer here from lagers to IPAs to barrel-aged stouts. Plus, they source almost all their hops from Pacific Northwest farms and they deliberately limit their distribution to Oregon, Washington, Idaho, and Northern California to reduce carbon emissions from transportation.
But beer isn’t the only great thing Fort George does—the food you’ll get here is also fabulous. Some of the most popular items are their Poutine made with wild mushroom gravy, Ellsworth cheese curds, garlic mayo, and green onions, their beer-battered Albacore Fish and Chips, or the Armadillo sandwich made with fried chicken, sliced onions, bacon, pepper jack cheese spread, aji amarillo pepper sauce on a butter-grilled pub bun. The wood-fired pizza is also top-notch, but remember you can only order it if you sit upstairs.
Fort George is a must-visit place anytime you’re in Astoria for great beer, killer food, and friendly service. They also have live music and are committed to helping out the community by hosting a weekly lecture series put on by local organizations and putting on benefit nights for local nonprofits and organizations.
