There’s a new reason to get excited about coffee in downtown McMinnville, and trust us when we say that this one’s actually worth getting out of bed for.

Pioneer Joe Coffee Company, the family-owned Oregon business that’s built a loyal following along the coast, has officially opened its newest coffee shop at 416 NE Third Street in McMinnville.

The doors opened September 14, bringing locally roasted coffee, creative specialty drinks, and plenty of delicious breakfast options to one of the Willamette Valley’s most charming downtown districts. The overall vibe is incredibly stylish, yet so very cozy. The shop is one of those places that’s charming enough to drag friends out to for an espresso-date, or just curl up solo with a good book, a latte, and let the afternoon slip away.

Behind Pioneer Joe are Jerome and Gitl Black, two wonderful people we’re lucky enough to call friends. We’ve watched their passion for genuinely good coffee turn into something pretty special, and seeing that same experience make its way into McMinnville is truly exciting. But friendship aside, there’s just something about their coffee that deserves some serious attention.

The Secret Is in the Beans, Because They’re Roasted Right Here in Oregon

Here’s what sets Pioneer Joe apart from your typical coffee stop. They purchase their own green coffee beans from around the world and roast them right here in Oregon, near Lincoln City. Those beans go straight into the espresso drinks served at their shops, and customers can purchase bags to take home, too.

In 2025, Pioneer Joe expanded its roasting operation by acquiring Cape Foulweather Coffee Roasters, adding production capacity and strengthening its position as a major independent coffee roaster on the Oregon Coast. It’s a remarkable step for a family business that just keeps on investing in its Oregon roots.

And I’ve got to give a special shout-out to Daniel’s Blend.

The Blacks’ son Daniel is the roasting mastermind behind every roast and blend offered by Pioneer Joe, and he has single-handedly ruined me on every other coffee brand out there.

Look. I don’t normally drink black coffee. In fact, most of the time, I can’t stand it without something to cut the bitterness. But Daniel’s Blend? Completely different story. It’s genuinely the smoothest, most enjoyable coffee I’ve ever had, and one of the few I actually prefer drinking black.

No cream. No sugar. Nothing to hide behind. Just an incredibly satisfying cup of French roast heaven with notes of chocolate-cherry and almond.

If you’re visiting Pioneer Joe for the first time, do yourself a favor and ask about it. Or, if you want to see if I can put my money where my mouth is, order a bag online.

Pumpkin Lattes, Maple Cold Brew, and Some Seriously Tempting Fall Drinks

Fall is a particularly good time to visit because Pioneer Joe’s seasonal menu is loaded with cozy flavors. There’s the Frosted Pumpkin Latte, made with pumpkin sauce, white chocolate, whipped cream, and cinnamon sprinkles. The Hazel Harvest Mocha combines hazelnut, cardamom, and chocolate sauce, while the Maple Cold Brew gets dressed up with white chocolate cold foam and caramel drizzle.

Then there’s the Sweater Weather Latte, featuring maple and butter pecan, and the Amber Spice Chai with caramel and pumpkin spice. If you’re craving something a little different, the Apple Crisp Lotus combines apple cider, Lotus Energy, cinnamon, caramel, and cold foam.

Get one to go and simply wander the streets of downtown Mac. It’s kind of the perfect Oregon fall day activity.

And yes, you can order hot or iced, with flavored cold foam or whipped cream available to make things even more indulgent.

Coffee isn’t the only reason to stop in, either. Pioneer Joe also serves breakfast sandwiches on croissants, English muffins, or bagels, along with bagels and spreads, yogurt and granola, smoothies, chai, matcha, and other non-coffee favorites. There’s something for the serious espresso drinker and the person who just wants a sweet afternoon pick-me-up.

A Little Oregon Coast Coffee in the Heart of Wine Country

McMinnville already has plenty going for it, from its historic downtown to the vineyards and restaurants that make this corner of the Willamette Valley such a fantastic place to explore. Now there’s another locally owned business to add to your list.

For those of us who’ve followed Pioneer Joe’s growth along the coast, this newest location feels like a natural next chapter. It’s a chance for even more Oregonians to discover a company that’s passionate about its coffee, its community, and the people behind every cup.

We’ve previously covered Pioneer Joe’s remarkable expansion on the Oregon Coast, and it’s been wonderful watching that story continue. Whether you’re exploring McMinnville for the day or you’re a local looking for your next favorite coffee spot, we hope you’ll give Jerome, Gitl, and the Pioneer Joe crew a warm welcome.

And seriously, just try Daniel’s Blend. You can thank me later.
