An early morning 911 call about a vehicle fire outside Forest Grove has developed into a major homicide investigation after authorities discovered five people dead on a rural Washington County property. Several domestic animals were also found dead at the scene, and detectives say no arrests have been made.

According to an official media release from the Washington County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were dispatched at 5:27 a.m. on Saturday, August 22, to assist the Forest Grove Fire Department at 47350 NW Otis Lane in unincorporated Washington County. The response began after a caller reported a vehicle fire in the area.

Fire personnel who arrived at the property discovered human remains and requested law enforcement assistance. As responders continued working at the scene, they ultimately found a total of five deceased people along with several domestic animals.

The discovery quickly brought a large investigative response to the rural property. Detectives from the Washington County Sheriff’s Office are handling the case with assistance from the Washington County Major Crimes Team, an interagency unit made up of detectives from law enforcement agencies across the county.

Investigators have released few details about the five people found at the property. Their identities have not been publicly announced, and the Sheriff’s Office has not disclosed how they died, how they may have been connected to one another or what events unfolded before emergency crews arrived.

What authorities have confirmed is that detectives do not believe the deaths were the result of a random act of violence. As of the Sheriff’s Office release on Sunday, August 23, no arrests had been made.

The scale of the response reflects the complexity of the scene. Oregon State Police Crime Lab Forensics was called in to help process the property, alongside personnel from the Washington County Sheriff’s Office Forensics team and Property & Evidence.

Several specialized Sheriff’s Office units have also supported the investigation, including the Remotely Operated Vehicle Team, Crash Analysis Reconstruction Team, Search and Rescue, and Tactical Negotiations Team. The Sheriff’s Office has not provided details about the specific role each team played at the property.

The investigation has also drawn assistance from agencies throughout the region. Those listed by the Sheriff’s Office include the Forest Grove Fire Department, Forest Grove Police Department, Beaverton Police Department, Cornelius Police Department, Hillsboro Police Department and Tigard Police Department.

Additional help has come from the Oregon State Police Crime Lab, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, Washington County Animal Services, the Washington County Medical Examiner’s Office, the Washington County Digital Forensics Lab and American Medical Response.

The property is located in the countryside outside Forest Grove, where communities on the western edge of the Portland metropolitan area transition into farmland and wooded foothills. In a rural setting like this, investigators may have fewer immediate witnesses than they would in a densely populated neighborhood, making information from people familiar with the property especially important.

The Sheriff’s Office is now asking the public for help. Investigators specifically want to hear from anyone who has information about the residents of the property or people associated with them.

Anyone with information is asked to call Washington County non-emergency dispatch at 503-629-0111 and reference case number 50-26-11866.

Many of the most significant questions surrounding the case remain unanswered. Authorities have not publicly identified the victims, announced a suspect or explained whether the vehicle fire was connected to the deaths beyond being the incident that initially brought emergency crews to the property.

For now, what began as a routine fire response before sunrise has become a large, multiagency homicide investigation in rural western Washington County. Detectives continue working through the scene and gathering information as they try to determine what happened at the Northwest Otis Lane property.

This is a developing story. That Oregon Life will update this report as additional verified information is released by authorities.
