Whales close to shore, crashing winter waves, and a harbor tucked directly into town.
Local history and character
The harbor was developed in the early 20th century and named for a local Siletz leader known as Depot Charley. Highway 101 and the arched bridge transformed the community into a coastal stop centered on fishing and whale watching.
Few coast towns place visitors this close to open-ocean energy. Whales can surface beyond the seawall, boats squeeze through the harbor entrance, and winter swells turn the basalt shoreline into a spectacle best watched from protected viewpoints.
