It was a wild day along the Oregon Coast Saturday, where two very different rescue situations unfolded just miles apart, drawing major emergency response and plenty of attention from onlookers.

From a helicopter hoist near Rocky Creek State Scenic Viewpoint to a fire vehicle partially swallowed by the surf in Cannon Beach, the day served as a reminder of just how unpredictable the coast can be.

The first incident began mid-morning just south of Depoe Bay, where emergency crews were called to a rocky stretch of coastline known for its steep drops and rugged terrain.

A man in his 20s had reportedly slipped on the rocks and suffered injuries to his lower legs. With limited access and dangerous footing, responders quickly realized a traditional rescue wouldn’t be the safest option.

Instead, they called in the United States Coast Guard.

Within a short time, a Coast Guard helicopter arrived overhead, hovering above the jagged shoreline as crews below stabilized the injured man. In a precise and coordinated maneuver, he was lifted from the rocks and safely transported to medical personnel. He was later taken to a nearby hospital in stable condition.

Officials noted that this area of coastline is especially hazardous, with sheer drops and unstable surfaces that can quickly turn dangerous, even for experienced visitors.

Chaos in the Surf at Cannon Beach

Later that afternoon, attention shifted north to Cannon Beach, where what began as a routine patrol quickly escalated into a complex and highly visible emergency.

Fire crews spotted what appeared to be a surfer struggling in a rip current near Chapman Point and immediately launched a rescue response. Additional units were called in as conditions along the beach and nearby waterways made access difficult.

In order to reach the scene, crews attempted to cross Ecola Creek, which had been reshaped by recent storms. What looked like stable ground turned out to be soft, unstable sand beneath shallow water.

One of the department’s command vehicles became stuck.

As the tide began to rise, the situation worsened. Water crept higher around the vehicle, eventually leaving it partially submerged and digging deeper into the sand. Onlookers gathered along the beach, watching as multiple attempts were made to pull the truck free using winches and nearby vehicles.

At one point, a Coast Guard helicopter circled overhead, adding to the intensity of the scene.

Despite the complications, rescue teams continued searching for the reported surfer using lifeguards, watercraft, and aerial support. Visibility in the surf zone shifted constantly, making it difficult to track any possible victim.

After an extensive search, no missing person was located, and the operation was eventually called off.

A Community Effort to Get the Truck Out

Meanwhile, getting the stranded fire vehicle out of the sand became its own challenge.

Local volunteer recovery group Sons of Beaches 4x4 stepped in to help, bringing the kind of specialized equipment and experience needed for tricky coastal recoveries. After multiple attempts and careful coordination, the vehicle was successfully freed from the creek area.

Cannon Beach police later indicated the truck had been recovered, though officials declined to share further details about the incident.

A Reminder of the Coast’s Power

While both situations ended without loss of life, they highlight just how quickly conditions can change along the Oregon Coast.

From slick cliff edges to shifting sands and powerful currents, even a calm-looking day can turn dangerous in a matter of moments.

For the crews who responded, it was a long day of adapting to those conditions and making split-second decisions in unpredictable environments. For everyone watching, it was a front-row reminder that the ocean always has the final say.
