Local history and character
Newport grew around Yaquina Bay as fishing, shipping, and tourism expanded in the late 1800s. The Yaquina Bay and Yaquina Head lighthouses, historic bayfront, and active fleet keep its maritime story visible.
Newport incorporated in 1882 after development around Yaquina Bay, a major harbor for fishing, shipping, and travel. The Yaquina Bay Lighthouse opened in 1871 and Yaquina Head Lighthouse followed soon after. In 1936, the Yaquina Bay Bridge completed the last link of the Coast Highway, replacing a ferry crossing and tying the town more closely to the rest of the Oregon Coast.
Newport has enough depth to support a complete coast vacation. The active fishing fleet, Aquarium, research community, lighthouses, Nye Beach arts district, and broad ocean beaches feel connected but never interchangeable.

Newport essential
Plan time for the Oregon Coast Aquarium
The Oregon Coast Aquarium is one of Newport’s defining attractions and an important center for marine education and wildlife care. Its Yaquina Bay campus introduces visitors to more than 15,000 animals representing over 300 species, with sea otters, puffins, jellies, touch pools, a seabird aviary, and the walk-through Passages of the Deep among the experiences families remember most. Most exhibits are indoors, while several outdoor habitats make layers useful even on a mild day.
Allow roughly two and a half hours for an unhurried visit, longer with young children or special programs. Parking is included, the main paths are wheelchair and stroller friendly, and checking the Aquarium’s official site before arrival is the best way to confirm seasonal hours, admission, animal encounters, and current exhibits.
