Local history and character
Chetco people have lived along this coast and river since time immemorial. Brookings was founded as a company lumber town in the early 1900s and was named for company president John E. Brookings.
Brookings sits at the mouth of the Chetco River, in the ancestral homeland of the Chetco people. The modern city began in 1913 as a California and Oregon Lumber Company town named for owner John E. Brookings. Timber, fishing, Harbor, and lily-bulb farming shaped the community after the original mill closed; the older core also reflects a plan by architect Bernard Maybeck. That layered river, harbor, and timber history helps explain why Brookings and nearby Harbor function as one connected travel base today.
Brookings feels different from the coast farther north. Redwood influence, a warmer microclimate, the Chetco River, a busy harbor, and the extraordinary Samuel Boardman corridor combine into a destination worth more than a quick border stop.
