SALEM, Ore. — In a stunning act of courage and relatability, Oregon Governor Tina Kotek visited a WinCo Foods on Tuesday afternoon “to see how regular Oregonians live,” reportedly spending nearly seven minutes inside the store while bravely imagining what life might be like if she weren’t rich. Staff report she later described the experience as “life-changing,” adding that she now understands why “people insist on working multiple jobs.”

Witnesses say the Governor entered the grocery store shortly after 2:00 p.m., flanked by three aides and a single reusable tote bag for optics. Kotek was seen staring intently at a row of off-brand cereal boxes before whispering, “So this is what struggle looks like.”

“She picked up a bag of WinCo brand chips and looked like she’d just touched poverty for the first time,” said shopper Megan Taylor of Keizer. “Then she asked if you have to scan your own groceries here, and when we said yes, she audibly gasped.”

A spokesperson for the Governor’s office later confirmed that Kotek’s visit was part of her ongoing ‘Understanding Oregon’s Working Class’ initiative, which sources say also includes future field trips to a Jiffy Lube, a laundromat, and a studio apartment in Gresham (with a strict 12-minute limit per stop).

According to staff, the Governor made it halfway down the frozen food aisle before reportedly muttering, “It’s just so… fluorescent,” and retreating to the organic section to “recenter her energy.”

Witnesses say Kotek spent several moments in quiet reflection at the checkout, staring at a shopper paying in quarters. “You could tell she was moved,” said WinCo employee Brian Harper. “She even turned to her aide and asked if normal people actually budget. Then she nodded solemnly like she’d just read The Grapes of Wrath for the first time.”

Kotek did not make any purchases, though her team later issued a press release confirming that her heart “was forever changed by the resilience of Oregon’s coupon users.”

As she exited the store, a small crowd gathered in the parking lot to watch her get into her state-issued SUV. Before departing, the Governor reportedly placed her hand over her chest, gazed back at the WinCo, and said, “Someday, I hope these people can afford the luxury of kale.”

The Governor’s office later announced plans for another empathy outreach event next month at Dutch Bros, where Kotek will bravely attempt to order something off the “secret menu” without a communications consultant present.
