Housing? Taxes? Crime? Oregon voters were thrilled to discover both candidates have mastered the ancient art of blaming each other.
OREGON — Thousands of Oregonians reportedly emerged from the latest gubernatorial debate overflowing with optimism after watching two grown women spend 90 minutes explaining, in extraordinary detail, why the other should never be allowed anywhere near the governor’s office.
The highly anticipated debate, originally intended to address housing affordability, rising taxes, homelessness, and crime, quickly evolved into what political analysts described as “two people with microphones attempting to end each other’s careers on live television.”
By the end of the evening, neither candidate had presented a particularly clear plan to solve the state’s problems. However, voters had learned that both women were apparently dangerous, incompetent, dishonest, and possibly responsible for the collapse of Western civilization.
“I feel so much better about Oregon’s future,” said one Eugene resident, staring blankly at her television. “They’ve both made excellent arguments for why neither of them should be governor.”
A Bold Vision of Mutual Destruction
The evening opened with a simple question from the moderator.
“What is your number one priority for Oregon families?”
“My number one priority is making sure Oregonians understand how dangerous my opponent is,” the governor declared.
“That’s interesting,” her challenger responded. “Because my number one priority is making sure Oregonians understand how dangerous the governor is.”
The moderator attempted to redirect the discussion toward affordable housing.
“I’ll tell you what’s unaffordable,” the governor replied. “Four years of my opponent’s policies.”
“Four years?” her challenger interrupted. “You’ve already been governor for four years!”
“Exactly! And imagine how much worse things would be if you’d been governor!”
The audience erupted as the moderator quietly crossed housing off the agenda.
Moderator Makes Fatal Mistake of Asking About Solutions
Approximately halfway through the debate, the moderator attempted something political experts later described as “recklessly ambitious.”
“Could either of you name one specific thing you would do to improve Oregon?”
A stunned silence filled the auditorium.
The governor adjusted her glasses.
Her challenger shuffled several papers.
Somewhere in the audience, a man coughed.
“With all due respect,” the governor finally responded, “I think the real question is why my opponent refuses to take responsibility for the problems facing Oregon.”
“You’re literally the governor!” her challenger shouted.
“And that’s precisely the kind of divisive rhetoric Oregon families are tired of hearing,” the governor replied.
Oregon’s Future Looks Bright, Apparently
As the debate concluded, both campaigns immediately released statements declaring overwhelming victory.
The governor’s campaign announced she had successfully exposed her opponent as unfit for office.
Her challenger’s campaign announced she had successfully exposed the governor as unfit for office.
Neither campaign addressed the troubling possibility that both statements could be true.
Meanwhile, Oregon’s housing crisis continued, grocery prices remained high, and families across the state remained hopeful that someone, somewhere, might eventually explain how to fix something.
At press time, both candidates had agreed to participate in a second debate, where they promised to finally discuss solutions to Oregon’s problems.
Immediately after settling which one was the bigger idiot.
