There are certain allegations that should stop every Oregonian in their tracks. This is one of them.
A Lane County sheriff’s deputy has been arrested following an investigation into an alleged inappropriate online relationship with a minor living outside the United States.
Deputy Dylan Ford was taken into custody by outside investigators on Tuesday, July 28, according to the Lane County Sheriff’s Office. The arrest came roughly one month after the agency learned of the accusation on June 26.
There is no polite way to describe the nature of this allegation. It is sickening.
Law enforcement officers are entrusted with enormous authority. They enter people’s homes, carry weapons, make arrests and are regularly called upon to protect children from abuse, manipulation and exploitation. When someone wearing that badge is accused of engaging in inappropriate contact with a minor, the alleged conduct represents more than a potential violation of the law. It strikes at the very foundation of the trust placed in law enforcement.
Children are among the most vulnerable people in any society. Adults are supposed to protect them, not pursue secret relationships with them, exploit their inexperience or take advantage of the distance and anonymity provided by the internet.
That responsibility should weigh even more heavily on someone who has sworn an oath to uphold the law.
The Lane County Sheriff’s Office said it contacted an outside agency immediately after receiving the report so the allegations could be investigated independently. Ford was arrested by investigators on July 28 and has since been placed on unpaid administrative leave while the criminal investigation continues.
The sheriff’s office said Ford has worked for the agency for approximately seven and a half years. State records also identify Ford as a Lane County deputy who graduated from Oregon’s public safety academy in April 2019.
That history makes the allegation even more disturbing. This was not a new employee still finding his footing. Ford had spent years serving under the authority and public credibility of the Lane County Sheriff’s Office.
To its credit, the agency did not attempt to investigate one of its own employees behind closed doors. Referring the matter to an outside agency was the appropriate decision, as was removing Ford from paid duty following his arrest.
But those steps are the minimum the public should expect. They are not favors. Accountability must be immediate and transparent whenever allegations this serious involve someone trusted to enforce the law.
The sheriff’s office thanked the Linn County Sheriff’s Office and the Federal Bureau of Investigation for assisting with the case. Officials have not publicly released additional information about the minor, the country involved, the nature of the alleged communications or the specific charges connected to Ford’s arrest.
Those unanswered questions matter.
The public deserves to know whether investigators believe this was an isolated allegation, how long the reported contact continued and whether Ford’s position as a deputy played any role in the alleged relationship. Investigators must also determine whether there are other potential victims or witnesses who have not yet come forward.
At the same time, Ford’s arrest is not a conviction. He is entitled to due process, and the allegations will need to be proven through the justice system. That legal principle matters, even in a case that understandably produces anger and disgust.
Presumption of innocence, however, does not require the public to respond with indifference.
Oregonians are allowed to be furious when a person trusted to protect vulnerable people is accused of conduct that may have placed a child in danger. We should expect a higher standard from those who carry a badge, not a lower one.
Most deputies and officers will never face an allegation like this. Many serve their communities honorably and regularly confront the very predators who target children online. That is precisely why cases involving law enforcement personnel are so damaging. They undermine the work of every honest officer and make already vulnerable people wonder whether those in authority can truly be trusted.
The Lane County Sheriff’s Office said it takes the allegations seriously and is cooperating with the investigation. Now the process must follow the evidence wherever it leads, regardless of Ford’s former standing within the department or the embarrassment the case may cause.
Protecting the reputation of an institution can never come before protecting a child.

If the allegations are substantiated, the consequences should reflect not only the harm allegedly directed toward a minor, but also the profound betrayal that occurs when someone sworn to protect the vulnerable is accused of becoming a source of danger himself.
