These Giant Cinnamon Rolls Are Putting a Small Oregon Bakery on the Map

Written by

If you’ve ever driven down I-5 between Eugene and Cottage Grove, you may have seen the billboards advertising Creswell Bakery. The stop takes you into downtown Creswell, where plate-sized cinnamon rolls, fresh bread, and savory hand pies make a persuasive case for getting off the freeway. You’ll find the bakery at 182 S. 2nd Street in Oregon’s southern Willamette Valley. It opens seven days a week, so this is one bakery visit you can work into a weekday road trip as easily as a weekend outing.

Creswell Bakery is owned by Heidi Tunnell, a classically trained chef who graduated from the Culinary Institute of America in New York. According to the bakery’s own history, she started Farm Girl Kitchen in her grandmother’s Creswell home in 2006 and sold baked goods at a local farmers market one day a week. Catering became part of the business, but baking remained a steady part of her work. The bakery dates its opening to 2008, and bread is still central to what comes out of the kitchen.

The kitchen makes its breads, pastry doughs, dressings, and croutons from scratch, and the bacon gets the same attention. Pork bellies spend a week curing before they go into the smoker, then the bacon is cut into thick slices. Local ingredients show up throughout the menu, from Tillamook cheddar to Oregon hazelnuts. For breakfast, the ciabatta bacon sandwich brings that house-cured bacon together with an egg and cheddar on the bakery’s own bread.

Creswell Bakery’s cinnamon rolls and fresh bread

Creswell Bakery has plenty to offer beyond breakfast, but we can’t go any further without mentioning the cinnamon rolls. If you’re always disappointed by a cinnamon roll with skimpy frosting, the generously iced rolls in the photographs here should get your attention. The bakery still lists its classic, plate-sized cinnamon roll on the current ordering menu. Bring a friend if you would rather split one and leave room for another pastry. Four-packs are also listed for weekends, with the bakery asking customers to call a day ahead for orders on other days.

But since we can’t eat cinnamon rolls for every meal, there are plenty of other options to consider. The current sweet-roll lineup includes a Hazelnut Sticky Bun made with Oregon hazelnuts, a Raisin Walnut Sweet Roll, and an Orange Coconut Roll finished with orange cream cheese frosting and toasted coconut. Cardamom buns, croissants, and cookies add more decisions to the display. You can also pick up naturally fermented sourdough, with white and multigrain loaves listed on the ordering menu. Selection changes and items can sell out, so check the official pickup menu when planning an order.

Breakfast, lunch, and savory hand pies

When you’re all sweetened out, turn to the breakfast and lunch menu. Try the Ham & Cheese Pretzel, a savory hand pie, or the House Made Cold Roast Beef Sandwich with chipotle mayonnaise, lettuce, onion, and Tillamook cheddar on ciabatta. The meat pie contains ground beef, cheddar, and potatoes, while chicken and roasted vegetable versions offer alternatives. Made-to-order breakfast and lunch end at 3 p.m. daily, even though the bakery stays open later Monday through Saturday. The bakery’s menu lists hand pies and pretzels as all-day options, subject to availability.

This little bakery has created quite a name for itself, and customers go out of their way for its breads, pastries, and sandwiches. Eugene, Cascades & Coast, the regional visitor organization, describes it as a draw for food lovers from across the area. There are useful things to take home, too: the current ordering menu includes pizza dough, frozen savory hand pies, coffee beans, and bakery shirts and hoodies. If you’re taking cold or frozen food on a longer drive, bring an insulated bag and ice packs.

If you’re looking for a pit stop on an Oregon road trip, Creswell Bakery works for a pastry to go or a longer break at an outdoor table. Plan for the weather rather than counting on an indoor dining room; current visitor information and customer reports differ on indoor seating. Ordering ahead is available through the bakery’s website, though walk-in orders are welcome.
