The rich, unmistakable aroma of garlic is filling the air in North Plains, Oregon, as the 2024 Elephant Garlic Festival kicks off today. Running from August 9th to 11th at Jessie Mays Community Park, this year’s festival is more exciting than ever, celebrating its 26th anniversary in true Oregonian style. Whether you're a lifelong garlic enthusiast or just looking for a unique summer experience, this festival promises to be a highlight of your summer.

The festival opens its gates at noon on Friday, welcoming visitors to explore a world where garlic reigns supreme. Imagine the savory scent of garlic-infused dishes wafting through the air as local vendors serve up everything from garlic fries to garlic ice cream—yes, you read that right! When I first heard about garlic ice cream, my immediate reaction was, "Hell no!" The idea of combining something so savory with something so sweet seemed downright wrong. But the more I thought about it, the more my curiosity got the best of me. Eventually, I couldn't help but wonder what it would actually taste like. And now, I absolutely have to try it.

This quirky flavor is just one of the many unique experiences that draw thousands of visitors to the North Plains Garlic Festival each year. Originally a simple community fish fry in the mid-1990s, the event has grown into a full-blown celebration of all things garlic, thanks to the innovative idea of local farmer Bob Gnos, who introduced elephant garlic into the mix. What began as a small gathering has now become a beloved tradition, where food lovers and adventurous eaters alike can indulge in the unexpected.

And if you’re looking to pair your garlicky delights with a refreshing drink, the beer and wine garden offers a variety of local brews and wines perfect for enjoying while soaking in the festive atmosphere.

Entertainment is a big part of the Elephant Garlic Festival. Each day features a lineup of local bands that will keep your feet tapping and your spirits high. From folk to rock, the music is as diverse as the attendees. Saturday is the festival’s crown jewel, featuring a vibrant parade through the streets of North Plains, followed by a classic car show that’s sure to delight auto enthusiasts. OMSI educators will also be on hand with engaging activities that combine fun and learning.

The Elephant Garlic Festival is more than just about garlic—it’s a community celebration. It brings together locals and visitors alike, offering a place where everyone can enjoy the best of what North Plains has to offer. The festival is free to attend, making it accessible to all. With plenty of crafts and artisanal goods on display, it’s also the perfect place to find a unique souvenir or gift.

The festival runs from 12:00 PM to 11:00 PM on Friday, 10:00 AM to 11:00 PM on Saturday, and 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM on Sunday. Parking is available at a designated area on 311th and Commercial St. for $5, but you might find free parking spots in town if you arrive early.

If your curiosity is piqued and you're ready to take the plunge into the world of garlic ice cream, you can find it at Jessie Mays Community Hall and Park in North Plains, Oregon. Head over to 30975 NW Hillcrest St, where this unique treat awaits. Whether you're a daring foodie or just someone looking for a new experience, this is your chance to see what all the buzz is about—because sometimes, you just have to know.
