Local history and character

The region is the homeland of the Qua-to-mah band of Athabaskan-speaking peoples. A short-lived 1851 settlement conflict, later fishing and timber industries, and the unusual open-water port all shaped the modern town.

Port Orford has resisted becoming a conventional resort town. Its working dolly dock, small galleries, exposed headlands, nearby mountains, and uncrowded trails give it a character that feels both creative and elemental.
