A fatal two-vehicle collision on the foggy afternoon of Saturday, December 7, has left one teen dead and four others hospitalized, shaking the North Eugene community. The crash occurred at the intersection of River Road and Beacon Drive, prompting an emergency response and the closure of River Road in both directions for several hours.

At 3:57 p.m., Central Lane 911 received reports of a serious crash involving a Toyota Corolla carrying five teenagers and a Chevy Suburban with a single occupant. According to the Eugene Police Department, four of the teens in the Corolla were rushed to a local hospital with injuries, while one teen tragically succumbed to their injuries at the scene.

The driver of the Suburban remained on-site and is fully cooperating with investigators, who are working to determine the cause of the crash.

River Road was immediately closed near Beacon Drive following the incident, with diversions set up at Spring Creek Drive to reroute traffic. An officer at the scene estimated that the road would remain closed for several hours as the Eugene Police Department's Major Collision Investigations team assessed the scene and documented evidence.

In addition to the crash, dense fog contributed to reduced visibility, complicating both traffic and emergency response efforts. Officials have urged drivers to remain cautious as winter weather conditions persist.

The tragic loss of life has left the community grieving. The identity of the deceased has not yet been released, pending notification of family members. The Eugene Springfield Fire Department also responded to the scene, working alongside police to manage the aftermath of the collision.

The investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash remains ongoing, and no further details have been released at this time.

This incident serves as a stark reminder of the need for heightened caution on the roads, particularly during adverse weather conditions like fog. Authorities are asking drivers to slow down, maintain a safe following distance, and stay alert to avoid further tragedies.

As the investigation continues, our thoughts go out to the families and friends of those affected by this heartbreaking event.

For updates on the case and road conditions, residents are encouraged to monitor official announcements from the Eugene Police Department.
