Becky Drury’s condition is improving after she was wounded in the October 15 shooting at Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, her husband said Monday. Will Drury shared the update in a statement provided to CNN through a family spokesperson on October 19. He said his wife still faces a long recovery.
“She’s an amazing woman who continues to show courage and resolve through all this,” he said, in CNN’s report carried by KRDO. He thanked the community, first responders and medical staff for supporting the family. The report also described surgeries for injuries to her left arm and right hand, citing a family post. Monday’s statement did not give a date for her to leave the hospital.
Drury, 54, works as an educational assistant at Silver Rail. Her husband’s earlier message, covered in TOL’s October 16 story about the family, asked for privacy as they focused on her care. Bend Police said Friday that her injuries were serious but not life-threatening and that she was being treated at St. Charles Bend.
Three children, ages 5, 8 and 11, and teacher Megan Lambert, 25, were killed in the attack. The 16-year-old gunman also died after an armed parent intervened. Seven-year-old Saylor Graham was wounded and transferred to Oregon Health & Science University; police described her condition as serious but stable on October 16. The new statement from Drury’s family provides no update on Saylor’s condition.
