A young woman lost her life after a tragic fall from a cliff while hiking in the Columbia River Gorge in Oregon, authorities reported on Monday.

The incident occurred near Horsetail Falls, located approximately 35 miles east of Portland. On Sunday, the woman, hiking with friends, went off trail after separating from the group and fell an estimated 50 to 60 feet, according to a statement from the Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office.

The statement revealed that the woman, in her 20s, was a resident of the Portland area.

At about 4:20 p.m. on Sunday, a 911 call reported a person falling from a cliff near the Oneonta Trailhead. Shortly after, another caller confirmed the fall, noting that bystanders were attempting CPR.

Despite these efforts, emergency responders pronounced the woman dead at the scene. The medical examiner is currently working to determine the official cause of death and to notify her family.

The sheriff’s office stated that her identity will be released once her family has been informed. Sadly, this is not the first tragic incident in the area this year. Another person lost their life in a similar fall in the same region in March 2024. Authorities are urging hikers to stay on designated trails and exercise extreme caution in the area.
