People are picky about their pizza and everyone has a different idea of what makes a good pie. Some like a thick crust and others like thin; some like a pizza loaded with sauce and cheese while others prefer these done with a light hand. It’s hard to find a consensus about important social matters like these, but the closest you’re gonna get may just be Mezza Luna Pizzeria.

There are two locations for this popular pizzeria, one in Eugene on Pearl Street near the Saturday Market, and one in Springfield on South 5th Street in the heart of downtown. Mezza Luna has won both the Eugene Weekly and the Register-Guard’s “Best Pizza” award as voted by readers several different years, signaling an enduring quality and popularity ever since the Eugene location was opened in 2005 by owners Sandy Little and John Fitzgerald.

Mezza Luna serves New York style pizza which means you’ll get a thin and crispy crust topped with fresh ingredients. And the folks here are committed to doing everything the right way and eschewing fancy machines or automation to cut corners. Here, you can still count on thoughtful approaches like hand-grated cheese, hand-tossed dough, and pies that are always cooked on a hot stone to ensure a crispy base while still maintaining a chewy texture to the crust.

You can order whole pies or pizza by the slice (and the slices are huge—just one will likely fill you up for lunch), and every day they have a rotation of five different pies to choose for slices. They even use their “slicer menu” to experiment with new pies to see how they’re received by customers. Those that are popular enough may eventually make their way onto the regular menu which is exactly what happened with the beloved Boss Hogg made with bacon, spinach, roma tomatoes, regular & smoked mozzarella, and made on a garlic/olive oil base.

Other favorites include the The Boot made with house-recipe Italian pork sausage, Gorgonzola cheese, roasted red and yellow peppers, caramelized onions, and roasted garlic with mozzarella and tomato sauce, while vegetarians will love the always popular Savory Garden made with artichoke hearts, sun-dried tomatoes, fresh spinach, roasted red and yellow peppers, roasted garlic, with mozzarella cheese and artichoke pesto sauce. And, while you may think of a pepperoni pizza as a mundane choice, don’t pass it up here! It’s a bit of a house special and the pie is covered in their signature spicy pepperoni. They also have a gluten free crust option that’s one of the best you can find in Eugene.

Pair all this with freshly tossed salads, garlic knots that master the perfect balance of garlic and cheese and are served with a delectable marinara sauce for dipping, and rotating beer taps with local brews and you’ve got a recipe for a pizza place that’s sure to stand the test of time.
