A vegetation fire is burning near the Jasper Road and Mount Vernon Road area of Springfield Wednesday afternoon, with early reports placing the fire at approximately 3 acres.
The fire was reported Wednesday, August 12, in an area north of Jasper Road and Mount Vernon Road on the southeast side of Springfield. Images from the area showed a visible column of smoke rising above the landscape as crews responded.
According to information reported by KVAL and attributed to the wildfire tracking service Watch Duty, the fire was estimated at about 3 acres shortly after 1:30 p.m. Wednesday.
Details remain limited as firefighters work the incident.
As of the first reports Wednesday afternoon, there had been no confirmed information released regarding evacuation orders, injuries, damaged structures, structures under immediate threat, or the percentage of the fire that had been contained.

The location is along Springfield's southeastern edge, where neighborhoods quickly give way to fields, wooded areas and rural properties. During the dry stretch of an Oregon summer, vegetation fires in this part of Lane County can draw a significant response because grass and other fuels can carry fire rapidly when conditions are favorable.
The Jasper Road corridor has seen other fires in recent days. Eugene Springfield Fire responded to a house fire along Jasper Road early Sunday morning that spread into nearby vegetation and threatened another home before crews contained it to the original residence. No injuries were reported in that incident, and authorities said the cause remained under investigation.
Wednesday's vegetation fire appears to be a separate incident.
The timing also comes during an extremely active wildfire season across Oregon, with numerous fires burning around the state and firefighting resources stretched across multiple incidents. A Lane County wildfire tracker has documented a number of vegetation and brush fires around the Eugene-Springfield area this summer, including a 4-acre fire near Highway 58 and Seavey Loop Road south of Eugene in late July.
For people living or traveling near Jasper Road and Mount Vernon Road, conditions can change quickly during an active vegetation fire. Residents should watch for emergency notifications and avoid the immediate fire area so engines, water tenders and other emergency vehicles have room to operate.
