A 26-year-old climber from Washington state was found safe after being reported missing on Mount Hood, one of Oregon's most challenging and unpredictable peaks.

As reported by CBS, the Clackamas County Sheriff's Office confirmed that Brendan Davis became separated from his climbing partner Thursday afternoon in dense fog after they successfully summited Mount Hood from Timberline Lodge. Rescuers were able to locate Davis using his voice as a guide, navigating treacherous terrain to reach him around 2:45 p.m. Pacific Time on Friday — nearly a full day after he went missing.

Despite enduring a cold night on the mountain, Davis was in good condition when found. He was able to hike down the mountain with the rescue team, according to officials.

Mount Hood, located roughly 70 miles east of Portland, stands as Oregon’s tallest mountain at 11,240 feet. Known for its allure to climbers, the peak attracts over 10,000 adventurers annually. However, the climb is far from simple, demanding significant preparation and technical skill.

The U.S. Forest Service has long cautioned climbers about the mountain’s notorious weather patterns, which can shift from clear skies to life-threatening conditions in moments. Tragically, Mount Hood has claimed numerous lives over the years due to sudden weather changes and accidents.

Since early 2024, climbers venturing above 9,500 feet are required to obtain a climbing permit, a measure aimed at enhancing safety on the mountain.

This recent rescue, highlighted by CBS, underscores both the dangers and the resilience of those who take on Mount Hood’s formidable challenges. While Davis's story had a happy ending, it serves as a reminder of the risks that come with exploring Oregon's majestic but unforgiving wilderness.
