Local history and character

Clatsop and Chinook peoples lived and traded here long before American settlement. The 1811 fur-trading post made Astoria the oldest permanent American settlement west of the Rockies, and fishing, canneries, timber, and the river shaped the city that followed.

Astoria stands in the homelands of Chinookan peoples, including the Clatsop, whose trade networks long connected the lower Columbia with the coast and interior. Fort Astoria was established here in 1811 as a fur-trade post; the settlement later changed hands during the War of 1812 and continued as a trading center. Fishing, canneries, timber, shipping, and immigrant communities shaped the growing port. The Great Fire of 1922 destroyed much of the business district, and the rebuilding helped create the downtown streetscape visitors see today.

What makes Astoria special is the way the past remains part of everyday life: cargo ships pass Victorian hillsides, fishing boats work below museums and breweries, and nearly every steep street opens toward water.
