A sea otter clutching a miniature pumpkin to its chest is already a strong argument for stopping whatever you’re doing. Then it takes that pumpkin to a basketball hoop. The Oregon Zoo shared a video of its sea otters’ seasonal dunking session on October 23, 2026, and the little paws, wet whiskers and determined trips to the basket are almost unfairly adorable. Somewhere in Portland, a basketball scout should probably be paying attention.
The zoo gave its original post on X the wonderfully economical caption “punkin dunkin.” The roughly 22-second clip shows otters holding their pumpkins in the water, swimming up to a hoop attached to the habitat wall and lifting the orange cargo into place. There’s splashing, there’s a close-up of an otter holding a pumpkin, and there’s enough enthusiasm to make you briefly consider watching an entire season of this.

There’s a Good Reason These Otters Play Basketball
The zoo has been working on its otters’ basketball skills for years. The routine began with Eddie, an older rescued sea otter whose caregivers used a miniature hoop to help him exercise his arthritic elbows. Smithsonian covered his unusual workout back in 2013, when a successful basket earned him a fish reward. It’s hard to argue with a fitness program that comes with snacks.
Juno picked up the game in 2019, and by November 2023 the zoo had announced that Lincoln and Sushi had joined in. In its explanation of the basketball program, the zoo described the activity as enrichment that could also help the otters stay limber as they age. Rising out of the water echoes a natural behavior called a “spy hop,” which wild sea otters use to look around above the surface. The hoop gives those movements a very watchable destination.
That history makes the pumpkin version even more fun to watch. The otters already have a basketball routine, and a miniature pumpkin turns it into a fall highlight reel. The footage keeps cutting between the dunking action and those close-up pumpkin hugs, which deserve their own replay. You don’t have to follow basketball to appreciate the grip strength involved.
Visiting the Otters in Portland
The Oregon Zoo is in Washington Park at 4001 SW Canyon Road, Portland, Oregon 97221. Check the zoo’s official website for current hours and tickets, and don’t plan a visit around catching this exact pumpkin routine: the social post doesn’t advertise a scheduled public performance. For another animal story from the same zoo, our December 2024 report on two orphaned cougar cubs is worth a read. For now, the pumpkin dunking is available without leaving your couch.
