This Tiny Oregon Drive-In Has Been Serving Memories Since 1956 And I’ve Been Eating There Since I Was a Kid

Some restaurants feed people.

Others become part of a family's story.

Long before food delivery apps, self-order kiosks, or burger chains on every corner, there was Scottie's Drive-In in Forest Grove. It's the kind of place where the milkshakes are still hand-spun, burgers are cooked the old-fashioned way, and generations of Oregonians have made memories over paper-wrapped cheeseburgers and baskets of crispy fries.

For me, Scottie's has never just been another burger joint.

Growing up in Forest Grove, I spent plenty of afternoons walking there after school at Tom McCall. It wasn't anything elaborate. Just friends, a little freedom, and that unmistakable feeling of being a kid with a few dollars in your pocket and nowhere else you had to be. We'd make the short walk, order a giant vanilla-chocolate swirl cone, and sit outside talking about whatever seemed important at the time. Sometimes that ice cream lasted all the way home.

Looking back, it wasn't really about the food.

It was about those moments.

The funny thing is, my connection to Scottie's started long before I was even born.

My mom grew up in Forest Grove too, decades before I did, and she tells stories of walking to Scottie's after school (back then, the Tom McCall Middle I went to was FGHS for her) was with her own friends. Different generation. Different fashions. Different music. But somehow the same little drive-in waiting at the end of the walk.

That's something pretty special.

How many places can honestly say they've become part of the childhood memories of multiple generations from the same family?

That's what makes Scottie's different.

A Forest Grove Tradition Since 1956

Scottie's Drive-In first opened its doors in 1956, and remarkably, it still serves the same community nearly seventy years later.

In an era where restaurants seem to come and go overnight, Scottie's has quietly stayed exactly what people love about it.

No gimmicks.

No trendy menu designed for social media.

Just classic American comfort food served with the kind of consistency that keeps customers coming back year after year.

The Lohrer family has owned and operated Scottie's for decades, continuing the tradition while preserving the restaurant's unmistakable old-school charm. Walk through the doors today and you'll still find much of the same welcoming atmosphere that has greeted customers for generations.

It feels refreshingly authentic.

You don't visit Scottie's because it's trying to recreate the past.

You visit because it never really left it.

Why Places Like This Matter

Every town used to have places like Scottie's.

Small drive-ins where teenagers gathered after football games.

Families celebrated Little League victories.

Grandparents brought grandchildren for ice cream.

First dates happened over chocolate shakes.

Somewhere along the way, many of those places disappeared.

Corporate chains replaced neighborhood institutions. Local ownership gave way to national branding. Menus became identical from coast to coast.

That's why restaurants like Scottie's matter so much.

They remind us that communities are built one conversation, one meal, and one familiar face at a time.

When you visit Scottie's, you're not just ordering lunch.

You're stepping into decades of local history.

Burgers, Fries, And The Kind Of Milkshakes You Remember

Of course, none of the nostalgia would matter if the food wasn't good.

Fortunately, Scottie's has never had that problem.

Their burgers are exactly what you hope they'll be. Juicy, satisfying, and refreshingly uncomplicated. Crispy fries arrive hot and golden, onion rings have earned a loyal following of their own, and the milkshakes are thick enough that you'll appreciate having a spoon nearby before your straw finally wins the battle.

It's comfort food done right.

Nothing pretentious.

Nothing overthought.

Just the kind of meal that somehow tastes even better when you're sitting outside on a warm summer afternoon.

The menu also includes sandwiches, hot dogs, fish and chips, soft-serve treats, floats, sundaes, and other longtime favorites that have kept customers returning for generations. While longtime locals may remember Scottie's famous broasted chicken, the restaurant retired it after the aging equipment finally gave out, a bittersweet reminder that even beloved traditions sometimes evolve.

More Than A Restaurant

One of my favorite things about Scottie's has always been the people.

If you've spent enough time there, chances are you've run into someone you know.

Teachers.

Former classmates.

Neighbors.

Little League coaches.

People stopping in after work.

Families celebrating birthdays.

College students grabbing lunch.

That's the magic of small-town Oregon.

Places like Scottie's become community gathering spots almost by accident.

Everyone eventually passes through.

Everyone has a story.

Forest Grove Is Worth The Trip

If you've never spent much time in Forest Grove, Scottie's makes for the perfect excuse to explore one of Washington County's most charming communities.

The city blends historic neighborhoods, tree-lined streets, local shops, and a welcoming downtown that still feels distinctly Oregon. Home to Pacific University, Forest Grove has a personality that's equal parts college town and small farming community.

Spend the afternoon wandering downtown, browse local businesses, grab dessert, or simply enjoy a slower pace that can be surprisingly difficult to find these days.

Scottie's fits perfectly into that experience.

It's the kind of place that reminds you why road trips through Oregon are often better when you skip the interstate and take the scenic route instead.

Why We Keep Coming Back

As adults, it's easy to assume nostalgia is just remembering things through rose-colored glasses.

Sometimes that's true.

But every now and then, you return to a place from your childhood and discover it really is just as good as you remembered.

Scottie's has always been one of those places for me.

Every visit brings back memories of those after-school walks with friends.

It reminds me of growing up in Forest Grove.

It reminds me of stories my mom shared from her own childhood, walking those same streets decades before I ever did.

And it reminds me that while the world changes faster every year, a few places still manage to stay wonderfully familiar.

A Taste Of Oregon That Refuses To Disappear

There's something comforting about knowing Scottie's is still there.

Still flipping burgers.

Still pouring milkshakes.

Still welcoming families who may someday tell their own children about afternoons spent there.

Places like Scottie's don't survive nearly seventy years because they're trendy.

They survive because they're woven into the lives of the communities they serve.

Parents bring children.

Those children grow up and return with families of their own.

The cycle continues.

Maybe that's the real secret behind Scottie's.

It has never just sold burgers.

It has quietly become part of people's lives.

And every time I pull into the parking lot, I can't help but think about those walks after school... and the fact that years before I ever ordered my first cheeseburger there, my mom was making those very same memories.

In a world that never seems to slow down, that's something worth holding onto.
