Beachgoers are urged to exercise caution along the southern Oregon coast this weekend, as the National Weather Service has issued a warning for sneaker waves expected from late Saturday through Sunday afternoon.
This advisory covers the coastlines of Douglas, Coos, and Curry counties.
Sneaker waves, known for their unpredictability, surge higher than typical waves and can catch individuals off guard. These waves have the potential to knock people over and pull them into the ocean. Additionally, they can shift rocks or sweep up large logs, posing serious risks of injury or entrapment.
The warning comes just weeks after a close call on the Oregon coast when a woman was nearly swept away by a powerful king tide wave. A video of the incident, captured near Lincoln City, showed the dramatic moment as she clung to a rock, narrowly avoiding being pulled into the ocean. The event highlights the dangers of underestimating coastal hazards and serves as a stark reminder to stay vigilant near the water.
To stay safe, weather officials recommend steering clear of rocks and jetties and keeping a greater-than-normal distance from the waterline.
