PORTLAND, Ore. — Wildlife officials say they've confirmed the first documented sighting of an Extremely Rare Portland Seagull, a subspecies long believed to exist only in stories told by brewery owners, baristas, and people who somehow manage to turn every conversation into a podcast.

The bird was photographed this week along Portland's waterfront, immediately drawing attention from birdwatchers and local residents after researchers noticed several unusual characteristics not commonly found among Oregon's seagull population.

Most obvious was the carefully styled bright blue haircut.

"At first we assumed somebody had dyed a normal seagull as a prank," said one witness. "Then it asked if our coffee was locally roasted and gave us a twenty-minute lecture about urban density."

According to experts, the Portland Seagull can be identified by several unique features, including facial piercings, extensive tattoos, strong opinions about transportation policy, and an instinctive attraction to food carts.

Unlike traditional Oregon seagulls, which survive primarily on stolen french fries and unattended beach snacks, the Portland variety reportedly feeds almost exclusively on artisan pastries, organic produce, oat milk foam, and whatever happens to fall off a sustainably sourced breakfast burrito.

Researchers say the bird is especially active near waterfront bike paths, independent coffee shops, used bookstores, farmers markets, and anywhere someone is discussing housing policy.

"It completely ignored an entire basket of fries," said local resident Mark Reynolds. "Then it flew across the street and stole half a vegan breakfast burrito. That's when we knew we were dealing with something different."

Witnesses also reported seeing the bird staring judgmentally at a flock of ordinary seagulls fighting over a discarded hamburger.

The Portland Seagull eventually landed nearby and spent forty-five minutes explaining why hamburgers were problematic.

ODFW biologists were initially skeptical of the reports until photographic evidence emerged showing the bird's distinctive appearance.

"The bright blue haircut was our first clue," said one agency representative. "The tattoo sleeve and nose ring were the second."

Experts believe the species evolved from a common gull population that spent too much time near Portland's urban core, gradually adapting to local environmental conditions.

"The working theory is that repeated exposure to coffee shops, vintage clothing stores, and bicycle infrastructure created a unique evolutionary pathway," one researcher explained.

Scientists remain divided on whether the bird migrates seasonally or simply relocates between neighborhoods depending on which coffee shop is currently trending on social media.

Residents are advised not to approach the Portland Seagull if encountered in the wild.

"If observed, maintain a respectful distance," ODFW officials advised. "Avoid making sudden movements. Do not mention chain restaurants. Do not criticize public transit. Under no circumstances should you suggest that all coffee tastes the same."

Officials also warned against attempting to feed the bird.

While ordinary seagulls can often be distracted with bread or french fries, researchers say the Portland variety may reject food that lacks an interesting backstory.

One observer reported offering the bird a sandwich, only to be met with what experts described as "visible disappointment."

The bird reportedly inspected the sandwich before flying away after learning the ingredients had been purchased from a national grocery chain.

Additional sightings have recently been reported throughout the city.

One witness claims the bird spent three hours inside an independent record store searching through vinyl before leaving empty-handed.

Another reported seeing it lock up a tiny bicycle before entering a coffee shop.

A third witness described watching the bird spend nearly an hour staring at a mural while occasionally nodding in approval.

Wildlife officials stress that more research is needed before definitive conclusions can be reached about the species.

For now, the Portland Seagull remains one of Oregon's most fascinating and mysterious urban birds.

As of publication, the bird was last seen along the waterfront, adjusting its carefully styled blue hair, sipping an oat milk latte, and preparing a strongly worded social media post about invasive Canadian geese.
