As a die-hard Goonies fan, I never imagined I’d be writing about a sequel rumor over 35 years after The Goonies first graced the screen with its lovable misfits, treasure maps, and truffle shuffles. But here we are, with the internet buzzing about a sequel supposedly titled Goonies Are Good Enough, set to be filmed soon and released just in time for Christmas 2026 or 2027. While rumors like this are always exciting for fans, it’s time to dive into where this story came from—and whether it holds water or is as fake as the stiff in the ice cream freezer.
Where Did the Rumor Start?
The rumor first appeared on several fan pages and Reddit threads earlier this year, with posts claiming that Warner Bros. had greenlit a sequel to The Goonies. According to these posts, the working title is Goonies Are Good Enough, a nod to Cyndi Lauper's iconic anthem for the original movie. The release date was tagged as Christmas 2026, aligning with holiday spirit and giving Goonies fans something to dream about. Even the big tabloid sites like the New York Post and The Daily Mail have taken the story and ran with it.
Recently, the Facebook page RuPaul's Drag Race Family posted an update with a movie poster that looks ridiculously official. As of this writing the post has over 140,000 reactions, almost 30.000 comments, and 67k shares, proving (if nothing else) that the beloved 80s movie still has a massive and loving fanbase.
But here’s where it gets tricky.
On September 6th, US tabloid The Sun reported, "A source said: The Goonies reboot has been talked about for a long time but it’s finally been given the green light to go ahead." The anonymous 'source' is never named, nor what production company they represent, so we remain highly skeptical.

Despite the growing buzz, no major entertainment outlets have confirmed this project, and there’s been no official word from Warner Bros. or anyone attached to the original film. If we were really about to embark on a sequel quest, wouldn’t there be an announcement with at least one nostalgic quote from Chunk or Data?
The Nostalgia Factor
The idea of a sequel makes sense in today’s Hollywood climate. With reboots, remakes, and sequels popping up like treasure in an Astoria cave, The Goonies seems ripe for a modern-day comeback. Fans like us have been calling for a sequel ever since Mikey lifted that pirate doubloon and cried, “Goonies never say die!” And let’s face it, it would be a joy to see our beloved crew back together, even if they’re older and now embarking on a new adventure with their own kids in tow.
Back in 2020, YouTuber Josh Gad was actually able to pull together the cast and crew for an epic online reunion that included all of the original cast members, and even Spielberg and Cyndi Lauper. If you haven't seen it before, drop what you're doing and go watch. Like RIGHT NOW. The nostalgia is palpable.
“Come on guys, this is our time,” could take on a whole new meaning, with the next generation of Goonies setting out to find One-Eyed Willy's lost gold or a new treasure. But is it realistic? And would it live up to our beloved classic? Some fans are hesitant, recalling other sequels that didn’t quite hit the mark. "Down here, it’s our time," but would it be the same magic?
Any Truth to the Sequel?
The reality is, this rumor seems like more of a hopeful dream than an actual film in production. A quick dive into the latest interviews with cast members reveals a lot of fond memories but little concrete talk of a sequel. Sean Astin (Mikey) has often expressed interest in revisiting the world of The Goonies, but even he has mentioned the difficulty in getting all the pieces together. Josh Brolin (Brand) recently laughed off the idea of a sequel, and Corey Feldman (Mouth) has stated that while fans constantly ask about it, there’s no real movement.
If anything, Goonies Are Good Enough may be fan fiction that grew legs, and while it’s fun to imagine, the lack of confirmation makes it more myth than movie. Richard Donner, the original director, passed away in 2021, further complicating any plans for a true sequel. Still, if there’s one thing we know about The Goonies, it’s that “Nothing is over till it’s over!”—and there’s always a chance for a surprise.
Final Thoughts
While we would all love a sequel to one of the most iconic adventure films of all time, the rumor mill seems to have spun a tale that's more fiction than fact. As of now, there's no official confirmation on Goonies Are Good Enough—but hey, a Goonie can dream, right? “Goonies never say die,” and neither will our hopes for a future adventure.
Last year, the new owner of Mikey's house in Astoria breathed new life into the iconic filming location, and there's always our Goonies Filming Locations road trip to take advantage of.
In the meantime, let’s just treasure the original and keep an eye out for any real developments. Maybe, just maybe, we'll all be chanting “Hey you guys!” in the theater again one day soon. Until then, “Goonies for life!”, and we'll keep you updated if a real sequel materializes out of the Astoria mist.
