One of the true greats is gone.

Legendary actor Robert Duvall — whose unforgettable performances shaped films like The Godfather, Apocalypse Now, To Kill a Mockingbird, Lonesome Dove, and one of my personal favorites, Falling Down — has passed away at the age of 95.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Duvall died Sunday at his Virginia ranch. His wife, Luciana, shared the news, reflecting not just on the icon the world knew, but on the man she loved.

Duvall earned seven Academy Award nominations throughout his career, taking home the Oscar for Best Actor for his portrayal of an alcoholic country singer in Tender Mercies (1983). It was one of many performances where he disappeared so completely into a role that you forgot you were watching an actor at all.

“To the world, he was an Academy Award-winning actor, a director, a storyteller. To me, he was simply everything,” Luciana said in a statement. “His passion for his craft was matched only by his deep love for characters, a great meal, and holding court. For each of his many roles, Bob gave everything to his characters and to the truth of the human spirit they represented. In doing so, he leaves something lasting and unforgettable to us all.”

Whether he was playing Tom Hagen, Lt. Col. Kilgore, Gus McCrae, or the weary cop in Falling Down, Duvall brought gravity, restraint, and authenticity that few actors could match. He never needed flash. He just needed truth.

An absolute legend of the screen. One of the best to ever do it.

Rest in peace, Robert.
