How the city took shape
A crossroads town shaped by trails, timber, and a deliberate streetscape.
Native travelers used routes through Sisters Country long before wagon roads crossed the Cascades. The settlement that became Sisters grew near the McKenzie and Santiam routes, served ranching and timber activity, and was formally established around the turn of the twentieth century. After the last local mill closed, the community increasingly leaned into travel and its Western-style commercial design—an identity visitors still encounter downtown.
