NEWPORT, Ore. — Sunday, October 25, 2026: A massive fire at a Pacific Seafood processing facility on Newport’s Historic Bayfront sent thick smoke billowing over Yaquina Bay Sunday morning, prompting emergency evacuations and concerns about potentially hazardous ammonia in the air.

Firefighters rushed to the scene as flames and smoke engulfed portions of the industrial facility. With reports of ammonia contamination and part of the building’s roof collapsing, authorities ordered residents and businesses within approximately one mile of the fire to evacuate immediately.

The Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office issued an official Level 3 evacuation notice, instructing everyone within the designated area to leave without delay.

The emergency has disrupted one of the Oregon Coast’s busiest waterfront districts, an area known for its commercial fishing fleet, seafood businesses, restaurants, and tourist attractions.

Firefighters Respond to Major Blaze on Newport’s Bayfront

According to reporting by Shayla Escudero of the Lincoln Chronicle, Newport firefighters were dispatched at approximately 8:51 a.m. Sunday.

As the severity of the fire became apparent, additional fire departments throughout Lincoln County were called to assist. By midmorning, approximately 40 firefighters were reportedly working at the scene.

Newport Fire Chief Rob Murphy confirmed to the Lincoln Chronicle that part of the roof had collapsed inside the seafood processing facility. The structural damage added another challenge for firefighters attempting to contain the blaze.

Early reports indicated no injuries, although the full extent of the damage and the status of everyone associated with the facility had not yet been independently confirmed.

The cause of the fire remains unknown. Although reports of an explosion have circulated locally, officials have not yet established whether an explosion caused the fire or occurred during the incident.

Ammonia Concerns Prompt Emergency Evacuations

Perhaps the most concerning development Sunday morning was confirmation that ammonia was present in the smoke rising from the burning building.

Chief Murphy confirmed the presence of ammonia to the Lincoln Chronicle but said the concentration was not yet known.

Ammonia is commonly used in industrial refrigeration systems, including those found in seafood processing and cold-storage facilities. However, exposure to elevated concentrations can pose serious health risks.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, ammonia exposure can irritate the eyes, nose, throat, and lungs. Higher concentrations may cause severe respiratory injuries.

The amount of ammonia released at the Newport facility, the extent of its movement into surrounding neighborhoods, and any resulting exposure levels have not yet been established publicly.

Because of those uncertainties, officials are urging the public to follow emergency instructions rather than approach the waterfront to observe the fire.

Level 3 Evacuations Ordered Within One Mile

The Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office emergency announcement ordered Level 3 evacuations within a one-mile radius of the incident.

A Level 3 evacuation means residents must leave immediately because of an existing or imminent danger.

FOX 12 Oregon reported that an emergency shelter was established at Sam Case Elementary School, located at 459 NE 12th Street in Newport, with pets welcome.

The station also reported that Highway 20 was closed between West Harney Street and Highway 101 as emergency responders worked in the area.

Residents outside the evacuation area should avoid unnecessary travel near the Bayfront and follow any additional instructions issued by local authorities. Those within the evacuation zone should not remain indoors in place of evacuating.

A Serious Emergency for Newport’s Working Waterfront

Newport’s Historic Bayfront is far more than a tourist destination. Behind its shops, restaurants, and familiar sea lion docks is a working commercial fishing port that supports countless coastal families and businesses.

Pacific Seafood is an important part of that waterfront economy, and the extent of the damage to its processing operations could have consequences well beyond Sunday’s emergency. Those impacts, however, cannot yet be determined.

For now, the immediate priority remains the safety of residents, employees, visitors, and the emergency personnel working to contain the fire.

Officials have not announced a confirmed cause, a timeline for reopening the evacuated area, or the total amount of damage.

This is a developing story. That Oregon Life will update this article as additional information becomes available from Newport emergency officials and the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office.
