Hidden just outside the city limits of Salem, Oregon, The Bag Inn is an Airbnb experience that feels more like stepping into a fantasy novel than a vacation rental. This isn’t just your run of the mill Airbnb, it’s a magical earthen, hobbit-style retreat that invites guests to disconnect from the everyday and rediscover a slower, cozier kind of magic. With a creek just outside the front door, two and a half acres of quiet countryside, and enchanting architectural details, it’s the kind of spot where you half-expect to see a wizard strolling up the path.

Step Inside The Shire

Every corner of the 1,000-square-foot Bag Inn has been carefully designed to celebrate Tolkien-style whimsy, without sacrificing an ounce of comfort. The round doors, charming nooks, and rustic wood finishes set the tone for a stay that’s both immersive and deeply relaxing. Whether staying as a couple or a group of up to four people, it’s the perfect spot to unwind, recharge, and watch the extended editions of Lord Of The Rings without ever needing to pause real life. The TV is hiding behind that gorgeous painting above the fireplace.

The Bag Inn doesn’t just hint at a Lord Of The Rings theme, it fully embraces it. From carved interior doors that evoke scenes from Barad-Dûr and Hobbiton to swords mounted above the fireplace and a hidden ring, it’s like getting to stay a night or two in Tolkien's literary playground.

Guests have the entire guest home to themselves, which includes a private bedroom, a spacious living and dining area, and one of the most beautifully designed bathrooms around.

Walking into the bathroom feels like walking into a spa. There's a luxurious soaking tub, a walk-in shower, and thoughtful lighting that makes it all feel a bit magical.

If you've spent the day out hiking, exploring the coast, or traveling from one end of the state to the other, I can't imagine a better way to relax than to turn on some Lord of the Rings music on Spotify and relax in the huge soaking tub.

While there’s no formal kitchen, the space does offer everything needed for light meals, and with town only a short drive away, local dining options are close at hand. Still, it’s hard to beat a quiet breakfast outside, with a view of the creek and meadow beyond, deer grazing in the distance, and the soft rustle of leaves overhead.

The home is attached to the host’s residence by a long, partially underground tunnel, though the guest space remains private. A hidden bookshelf door (locked and for utility access only) adds to the sense that secrets might be waiting just behind the walls.

The unique layout, combined with the peaceful rural setting creates the feeling of living in Hobbiton itself, where life moves slower and every detail hums with quiet magic.

One of the most delightful parts of staying at The Bag Inn is how deeply peaceful it is. Despite being minutes from urban conveniences, the location feels worlds away. The quiet countryside, gentle creek, and occasional wildlife add a layer of serenity that’s hard to find in a typical vacation rental. Outdoor seating lets guests enjoy the fresh air and scenic views, whether reading a book, sipping tea, or basking in calm serenity.

Inside, thoughtful amenities like high ceilings, plush bedding and air conditioning ensure comfort no matter the season. And while the fantasy theme is front and center, practicality hasn’t been overlooked. There’s Wi-Fi, parking for two vehicles, and enough space to sleep up to four guests, with extra beds set up in the living area.

Are there any hiking trails nearby? Yes! Check out the Skyline trail, which is just a few minutes away. It's an easy one mile hike through the woods behind Sprague High School.
