Tucked away in the lush forests of southern Oregon, just off Highway 62 on the road to Crater Lake National Park, sits one of Oregon’s most beloved hidden gems: Beckie’s Café. This rustic log cabin restaurant has been welcoming hungry travelers since 1926, and nearly a century later, it remains every bit as charming as the day it opened.
Step inside and you’ll feel like you’ve traveled back in time. The scent of fresh-baked pies fills the air, mingling with the woodsy aroma of pine trees drifting in from the Rogue River just outside.
Families, hikers, and road trippers from around the world make the pilgrimage here for one reason above all — Beckie’s world-famous huckleberry pie.
Beckie’s story began in the early 1920s, when Ed Beckelhymer, a local auto mechanic known as “Beckie,” built a small service station beside the Union Creek Resort.
His wife, Nettie, cooked hearty meals for travelers and loggers passing through. Word spread fast — soon, “Beckie’s Place” became a must-stop for anyone journeying between Medford and Crater Lake.

Nearly a hundred years later, the café still stands on the historic Union Creek Resort grounds, now listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Its cozy cabin-style dining room, friendly service, and nostalgic charm have made it a beloved stop for generations.
If there’s one thing that defines Beckie’s Café, it’s the pie. The signature Oregon huckleberry pie, made with berries handpicked from nearby mountains, is a local legend — sweet, tart, and bursting with wild flavor. The café’s current owner, Kent Watson, says travelers have come from as far away as China just to taste it.
But that’s only the beginning. The pie menu reads like a dream: very berry, blackberry, boysenberry, blueberry, cherry, apple, pecan, coconut, chocolate, peanut butter, banana — plus seasonal favorites like strawberry and peach. Every single pastry is baked fresh on site, along with homemade cinnamon rolls, dinner rolls, and other irresistible treats.
Beckie’s isn’t just a pie stop — it’s a full-fledged homestyle restaurant serving breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Morning visitors are greeted with plates of hotcakes and biscuits and gravy, while lunchtime brings juicy burgers and hearty sandwiches.
In the evening, the scent of sizzling steak mingles with pine-scented mountain air drifting through the open windows.
Whether you’re refueling after exploring Crater Lake, chasing waterfalls in the Rogue River Canyon, or simply escaping city life, Beckie’s Café offers the perfect slice of small-town comfort — one that has stood the test of time.
Because some places don’t need to change to be perfect.
