Silver Falls State Park is an Oregon gem at any time of the year, but winter brings its own kind of magic. From frosty waterfalls to icy cliffs, every turn of the trail offers something spectacular.

It rarely snows at Silver Falls State Park, but when the rare flakes do fall, the entire park transforms into a breathtaking winter wonderland. While the falls themselves don’t freeze, the landscape sometimes turns into an icy marvel when the conditions are just right. During freezing temperatures, the mist from the falls coats nearby trees, moss, and rocks and then freezes solid, creating an icy masterpiece of sparkling foliage and towering icicles hanging dramatically from cliffs. It’s the kind of scene you’d expect to find in a fairy tale and it's pure magic.

Found near Silverton, Oregon at Silver Falls State Park, the Trail of Ten Falls is a must-visit for anyone who loves waterfalls. This 7.2-mile loop is a moderate hike through a lush forest packed with stunning views. While the trail is popular in summer (and especially well loved in fall when the leaves change colors), in winter it can be like stepping into another world entirely. The trail meanders past ten incredible waterfalls, each with its own unique personality and charm.

The elevation gain of 800 feet along the trail adds a bit of challenge, but there are plenty of benches along the way if you need a quick rest. For a shorter trek, consider taking one of the connecting trails that offers easier access to the falls. When conditions are snowy or icy, we recommend taking the shorter connecting trails.

Tip For Winter Hiking At Silver Falls: All of the trails at Silver Falls State Park can be treacherous and slippery (as seen in the video below) in the snow and ice. During these conditions, if you must hike down the trail, consider using shoes with good grip, or other equipment meant for hiking in snow and ice.

The real showstoppers on the Trail Of Ten Falls are the four waterfalls where the trail lets you walk behind the cascade of water. Imagine standing behind South Falls and peeking through its 177-foot curtain of water. Add a wintry backdrop or towering icicles created by the freezing spray of water, and it’s downright magical.

Winter hikes can be unforgettable, but preparation is key. Check the park’s official website before heading out to ensure that all areas are open, as closures can occur due to weather or other conditions.

Dress in warm layers, and don't forget gloves, good hiking boots that are waterproof or water resistant, and a warm hat and hood. When driving to the park in snow or ice, you'll want to carry chains or have studded tires.
