Roger was more than a theme park builder. He was a craftsman, a visionary, and a man who believed magic could live in the woods of Oregon.

Born January 8, 1930, in Chippewa Falls, Roger moved to Astoria at just five years old. In 1954, he married Mavis Bjorke, and together they raised four children. A decade later, in 1964, Roger began construction on what would become one of Oregon’s most beloved attractions. Building much of it by hand, he slowly transformed a wooded hillside into a storybook world.

At 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, August 8, 1971, the gates of Enchanted Forest opened for the first time. Seventy-five visitors walked through that day. The following Sunday, 1,000 people came.

For 54 years, the park has remained open to the public, bringing joy and wonder to generations of families and becoming a treasured Oregon tradition.

Tucked just south of Salem, Enchanted Forest is known for its whimsical Storybook Lane, hand-crafted fairytale scenes, charming Old European Village, family rides, and its unmistakable homemade feel. Unlike massive corporate theme parks, Enchanted Forest has always carried the personal touch of its creator. You can feel it in the details.

Roger also took great care to ensure the park’s future. Long before his passing, he passed on his knowledge, craftsmanship, and vision to his children and grandchildren, ensuring a thoughtful transition. Today, three generations of the Tofte family continue to work at Enchanted Forest, carrying forward Roger’s original dream and preserving the spirit of the park for generations to come.

A celebration of life will be announced at a later time.

For so many Oregonians, Enchanted Forest is more than a theme park. It is a childhood memory. And thanks to Roger Tofte, that magic will continue.
