I can't tell you how much I love Oregon's high desert. I grew up in the lush greenery of the Willamette Valley, and while I love that too, there's something special about our state's gorgeous high desert area. Two thirds of our state is high desert, and features stunning vistas and peaceful spots to get away to. It's not lush and green, but it's still beautiful. Taking in the sunset over land dotted with sagebrush and lodgepole pine is one of my favorite things to do. There's a lot of great places you can go if you'd like to experience Oregon's high desert for yourself, but one of the best is Kah-Nee-Ta Hot Springs Resort, which has long been a place of relaxation and healing. The area’s history is rooted in the traditions of the Warm Springs Tribes, who have used the hot springs for centuries. In the early 1900s, a Portland doctor bought the land around the springs, but in 1961, the Warm Springs Tribes reclaimed it, turning it into a popular destination. Over the years, it’s been expanded and transformed, becoming the getaway it is today, with everything from natural hot springs to teepee camping.
The Perfect High Desert, Autumn Escape In Oregon
Fall is an incredible time to visit Kah-Nee-Ta, not just for the hot springs, but for all the outdoor activities it offers. With mild weather and sunny skies, it’s a great season for hiking, biking, and enjoying the beautiful landscape. For a little friendly competition, try your hand at frisbee golf, bocce ball, or even pickleball.
Whether it's a walk down a sunny trail, a round of tennis, soaking in the rejuvenating waters or cozying up around a fire pit, the resort offers a unique blend of relaxation, cultural experiences, and outdoor fun.
Kah-Nee-Ta is a place where nature, history, and adventure come together, making for an unforgettable getaway.
Soak In Kah-Nee-Ta's Rich Mineral Hot Springs This Fall
One of the biggest draws at Kah-Nee-Ta is its mineral-rich hot springs, which flow at a remarkable 500 gallons per minute. The water is packed with 32 healing minerals like magnesium, calcium, and potassium, making it the perfect remedy for sore muscles and overall wellness. The warm autumn weather is ideal for soaking, as cool desert nights pair perfectly with the steamy springs.
Imagine sinking into the healing water while taking in the crisp fall air—there’s really nothing like it. I personally think fall is the perfect time to take a relaxing soak. Many people find themselves stressed out during fall because it's back to school season and there's a lot to do. Others may just be tired after long weeks spent at work. Either way, autumn is a great time to pause and take a breath, and the hot springs at Kah-Nee-Ta are a great place to recharge.
Stay In An Authentic Teepee
For those looking for a unique experience, an overnight stay in one of Kah-Nee-Ta’s 20 authentic teepees is a must. These aren’t your average tents—they’re unique, spacious, and come with fire pits for roasting s’mores under the stars. The clear autumn skies of the high desert are a stargazer’s dream, making teepee camping an experience to remember.
You'll still need to bring your own cots or sleeping bags if you choose to stay in a teepee, but there's room enough for four people, making it a great overnight spot for a family of four or for you and three friends. If teepees aren’t your style, you can bring your RV and stay in the vibrant RV park or in a luxury hotel room.
Tip: Don't wait until the last minute to book your stay. The teepees fill up fast, so it's best to book well in advance.
Autumn at Kah-Nee-Ta brings a balance of adventure and tranquility that's hard to find elsewhere, which is why it's one of our top pics for a fall getaway in Oregon. Get more information about Kah-Nee-Ta Hot Springs Resort, and book your stay here.
