If you like supporting local businesses that consistently deliver phenomenal products, it doesn’t get any more local than the Pie Guy in North Plains. Bart VanDomelen, better known to his legion of loyal customers as “The Pie Guy,” has been making homemade pies out of his home for years and selling them right on his front porch—talk about keeping it local!

VanDomelen is a Pacific Northwest native and has worked in construction, as an auto shop owner, but most notably had a long stint as a fourth-generation strawberry farmer. He used to sell these berries at local farm stands along with his wife Tammy for a number of years before she had the idea to start making pies using their berries. To this day, Bart credits Tammy for teaching him the timeless craft of pie-making and years later he’s still making some of the best pies you can find in Oregon. He even enlists the help of his 92 year old mother who does all the packaging!

So what makes Bart’s pies so great? It may be hard to attribute just one factor, but it starts as a labor of love. These pies are 100% homemade using local ingredients whenever possible. They all come with a buttery, crispy shortcrust, and are always jam-packed with filling—there’s no skimping here! He also takes pride in making sure the natural flavor of the ingredients really stand out, which means his pies aren’t sickly sweet. His berry pies all have just the right blend of tartness and sweetness, and Bart tastes every filling himself before assembling so he can be sure he’s got the balance just right. But what’s really made The Pie Guy a household name is the incredible customer service. Bart is just about the nicest guy you’ve ever met and will go out of his way to make sure his customers are happy.

There’s hardly a pie in existence that Bart hasn’t made at some point, but a few of his most popular flavors are Marionberry (an Oregon classic), Strawberry Rhubarb, Banana Cream, Chocolate Cream, Lemon Cream, Razzleberry (mixed berry), and his famous Pecan Pie that has a bit of a cult following.

So where can you get these delicious pies? Just pick one up from his front porch! He keeps a rotating stock of them in a little fridge and it’s an honor-system for paying, so come prepared with cash or to pay with Venmo. You can also order ahead (texting works best) and pick up your pies at one of the many local farmers markets or he can have them waiting for you in the porch fridge. His smaller, five-inch pies feed one to two people and are $10, and the larger nine-inch pies that serve five to six people are $24.

He also takes special orders, and is happy to help out with fundraisers, weddings, birthdays and any special events.
