This Old School Astoria Gem Has Been Dishing Out Rich Frozen Custard For Decades

There are certain places on the Oregon Coast that feel stitched into your memory. For me, one of those places is Custard King.

Every time I find myself in Astoria, whether it is a windy spring afternoon or one of those golden summer evenings when the river glows, I somehow end up here. Maybe it is habit. Maybe it is nostalgia. Or maybe it is that first creamy bite of frozen vanilla custard that instantly makes the whole day better.

Established in 1951, this walk up stand has officially crossed the 75 year mark, and it still feels wonderfully unchanged. No gimmicks. No trendy rebrand. Just a little building on Commercial Street with a loyal following and a line that forms the second the sun peeks out.

Old School Burgers, Done Right

Before we even get to the custard, we need to talk about the food.

Custard King is one of those rare spots where the burgers taste like the kind you remember from childhood road trips. Juicy patties, toasted buns, and generous layers of cheese that actually melt the way they should. The Bacon Cheeseburger with Tillamook cheddar and crispy bacon is always a safe bet. The King Burger, stacked with double patties and double cheese, is the one you order when you are really hungry after a long beach walk.

And the fries. Always the fries. Crisp on the outside, fluffy inside, and absolutely meant to be dunked in their signature fry sauce.

If you are craving something different, the fish burger with crispy cod and house tartar is a coastal classic. On cooler days, I have even found myself going for chicken strips or tacos. It is simple food, but it is done with care.

The Custard Is The Star

Now for the reason most of us are really here.

That frozen vanilla custard is impossibly smooth and rich. It has that dense, velvety texture that regular soft serve just cannot compete with. I almost always get mine in a waffle cone, because if you are going to do it, you might as well go all in.

You can keep it classic, or have it dipped in chocolate or cherry coating for that satisfying crack when you bite in. Toppings range from hot fudge and peanut butter sauce to lemon curd and blueberry. I have even seen gummy bears make an appearance for the adventurous.

On a warm July evening, standing outside under those blue striped umbrellas with custard melting just a little too fast, it feels like summer distilled into a single moment.

A True Astoria Tradition

Part of what makes Custard King so special is the experience. It is still outdoor seating only, with wooden picnic tables that fill up quickly on sunny days. When it is raining, most people take their food to go and eat in the car while watching the mist roll through town.

There is something deeply comforting about knowing this little stand has weathered decades of change. Generations of families have stood in that same line. Kids who once needed help holding their cones now bring their own children back for their first taste.

Astoria has plenty of incredible places to eat, but Custard King remains one of the most enduring. It is not fancy. It is not flashy. It is simply good, honest food and custard that keeps people coming back year after year.

And if you ask me, any Oregon Coast road trip feels incomplete without it.
