People are advised to stay away from jetties, low lying beaches and surf zones in the affected area.
Residents and visitors along the southern Oregon coast are being warned to stay out of the surf zone, including beaches and low-lying shorelines from Thursday morning October 31st into Friday evening, November 1st, 2024. A high surf advisory was issued for the south central Oregon coast through the Curry County coast late Wednesday night. Large breaking waves are expected to be between 23 feet and 26 feet, and will create hazardous conditions. Beach erosion along with damage to any exposed infrastructure is possible, along with inundated beaches and low shorelines. People in the affected area are encouraged to stay away from jetties and beaches in the area and to exercise caution.
Another warning from the National Data Buoy Center warns of a high and steep northwesterly swell with a potential south gale, which will create steep and hazardous seas into Thursday night on October 31st, 2024. This warning affects coastal waters from Florence down to Point St. George in California. A gale watch and hazardous sea warning is also in effect from Florence to Cape Blanco, and from Cape Blanco south from late October 31st through Friday afternoon, November 1st, 2024.
The types of high waves being warned about are caused by strong storms over the Pacific. These storms form wind waves which travel away from the storm and towards shore, called swells.
