A little groundhog named Maple now living at the Fresno Chaffee Zoo has a backstory that’s anything but ordinary. Her journey began far from California in Bandon, Oregon, where a now-shuttered safari attraction became the center of a major animal welfare investigation and raid.

The West Coast Game Park Safari Raid That Rescued Over 300 Animals, Including Our New Favorite Groundhog

In May 2025, Oregon State Police led a four-day operation at West Coast Game Park Safari, a facility long criticized for its conditions. What investigators found was deeply troubling: malnourished animals, filthy enclosures, shocking neglect, missing animals, and a dead tiger found in a freezer. One inspection report described a lioness kept in a dark, unventilated den and a chimpanzee living in isolation after the loss of its companion. There was only one staff member responsible for the care of over 300 animals.

The scale of the operation went far beyond animal welfare. Authorities uncovered more than 80 grams of methamphetamine, 44 firearms, including a modified machine gun and roughly $1.6 million in cash and bonds. The discovery prompted additional warrants, and by the end of May 2025, the facility’s operator had been arrested and booked on multiple drug-related charges.

In total, 310 animals were rescued from the park and relocated to sanctuaries and licensed rescue facilities across the country. Among them was the groundhog now adjusting to her new life in Fresno. The zoo invited the public to help choose a fitting name for their newest groundhog resident, and she was named Maple.

The West Coast Game Park Safari had operated since the 1960s but had faced increasing scrutiny over the years. Federal inspectors repeatedly documented disturbing conditions, including lack of food and inadequate care plans for animals.

The investigation into the former park is ongoing, with authorities continuing to process evidence and pursue charges.

For one small groundhog named Maple, however, life has taken a turn for the better and we couldn't be happier for her. With a safe habitat and new name, she’s now a symbol of resilience, and a reminder of the importance of animal welfare.
