Occupying over 4,000 square feet of display space, this Historical Society museum invites visitors to explore a broad range of exhibits that reflect Bandon’s diverse past. From early Native American presence along the Coquille River to the rugged days of logging, cranberry farming, and shipbuilding, there’s something here for those who are curious about Oregon’s coastal heritage. Exhibits span everything from coal and interactive gold mining to household items from early pioneer life, military memorabilia, and even a look at the city’s tavern culture.
The maritime room alone is worth the visit, filled with gripping stories of shipwrecks, tugs, and riverboats that shaped Bandon’s identity. Another must-see is the newly rebuilt exhibit on the wreck of the steamer Fifield, which ran aground in February of 1916.
And for those drawn to the unexpected, the gold panning station, open on special days, offers a hands-on taste of the gold rush era.
Thousands of historic photographs line the walls, many with unnamed faces. Visitors are encouraged to step in as detectives and to help identify people from Bandon’s past.

Though the Museum operates with just one paid staff member, it thrives thanks to a team of over 30 dedicated volunteers. These individuals help welcome more than 4,500 visitors each year, sharing their knowledge and passion for Bandon’s history. The Museum is also supported by memberships, donations, grants, and proceeds from its charming gift shop, which offers local books, photos, and handcrafted items, and is well worth the visit.
