A large-scale search is underway in the Mount Hood National Forest after a 51-year-old man from Hubbard failed to return home from a hunting trip Friday night.
According to the Clackamas County Sheriff’s Office, the man — identified as Devon Dobek — had been hunting roughly 20 miles from Estacada when he went missing. Dobek had reportedly messaged a friend earlier in the day to say he’d successfully harvested a deer and expected to return home soon, but never did.
Deputies later found Dobek’s vehicle parked near the Fish Creek Trailhead off Highway 224. There was no sign of him or the deer. Authorities say Dobek is an experienced hunter familiar with the area.
A full search effort began around 10:30 p.m. Friday night, involving ground crews and search-and-rescue teams. Throughout the night, searchers reported hearing gunfire echoing through the forest, which they believe may have come from Dobek. Despite these signs, rescuers were unable to pinpoint the direction or location of the sounds.
As of Saturday afternoon, the search remained active. Poor weather conditions have prevented the use of helicopters and drones, and spotty cell service has made it impossible to track Dobek’s phone or GPS signal.
Anyone with information is urged to contact the Clackamas County Sheriff’s Office Tip Line at 503-723-4949 or submit information online, referencing case number 25-022972.
