Grace and Hammer is not your average pizzeria. It’s a sacred union of divine wood-fired pizza and history, wrapped up in a vibe that’s as charming as Redmond, Oregon itself. I had the absolute pleasure of visiting this spot one chilly January evening, and let me tell you, it’s one of those places that makes you want to shout “hallelujah!” after every bite.
From Place of Worship to Wood-Fired Pizza Joint
When you pull up to Grace and Hammer, you’re greeted by an unassuming but captivating sight. The pizzeria is housed in a historic church, and the transformation is stunning.
Built in 1912 and officially recognized as a historic site in 1976, this old, iconic Presbyterian church has seen it all—sermons, hymns, weddings, and even dance lessons. In 2019, its story took a flavorful turn when Chad and Cinnamon Nemec transformed it into a haven for pizza lovers. After relocating to Central Oregon from Austin, Texas, the Nemecs fell for the church’s unique charm and envisioned a space where great food and community could come together. With their experience in the restaurant industry and a passion for fostering connections, they gave this historic gem a delicious new purpose.
The old bones of the church give the space a timeless character, with large arched windows and original architecture that whisper stories of its past. Inside, the décor is warm and inviting, striking the perfect balance between rustic and modern. You can feel the love that’s gone into preserving the charm of the building while creating a space that feels welcoming and vibrant. On Friday nights, the Nemecs still ring the church bell, beckoning folks to dinner.
The Menu At Grace and Hammer Is A Heavenly Feast
The menu at Grace and Hammer is small but mighty. It’s clear they’ve chosen quality over quantity, and every item has been thoughtfully curated. From classic staples to inventive creations that will make you rethink what pizza can be, there’s something for everyone.
I started with a Caprese salad because I firmly believe you need to “warm up” before the main event. This wasn’t your run-of-the-mill salad, though. The tomatoes were fresh, the balsamic was mellow yet tangy, and it was topped with just the right amount of basil. It was a simple yet elevated take on a classic, and it set the tone perfectly for the meal.
And then, it was pizza time. I opted for their signature “Benevolent Bird”, which comes topped with Basil-Arugula Pesto, Lemon Herb Chicken Breast, Fresh Mozzarella, Roasted Tomatoes, Manchego Cheese, and Italian Herbs that ties everything together in the most magical way.
A table down the way had ordered the "Saint Stanley": Red Sauce, Pepperoni, Italian Sausage, Fresh Mozzarella, Caramelized Onions, and Calabrian Chilies.
If you're into trying new and interesting flavor combos, then the "Prodigal Pig" may just be right up your alley. It consists of Korean Kalbi Sauce, Mozzarella, Fontina, Smoked Pulled Pork, Pineapple Slaw, and Pickled Red Onion.
A Slice of Local Flavor
What makes Grace and Hammer even more special is their commitment to the local community. They source many of their ingredients locally, ensuring everything is as fresh as possible. Plus, the staff was incredibly friendly, making me feel like I was a regular even though it was my first visit.
Their drink menu is just as impressive as their pizzas, featuring local beers, Oregon wines, and craft cocktails, with offerings that showcase the best of Oregon’s Willamette Valley. Each mixed drink is named with a fun take on local Central Oregon sights and geography, like Grace and Hammer's signature "Bell Ringer Bloody Mary", crafted with Crater Lake Vodka. After dinner, I treated myself to a "Three Fingered Jack", G&H's take on the classic Old Fashioned, made with Maker's Mark, Honey, Orange Bitters, and garnished with Oregon Cherries.
If you've left room for dessert, indulge in creamy cheesecake, rich fudge brownies, or a rotating special dreamed up by the chef that week.
The Vibe: Casual, Yet Special
One of the things I loved most about Grace and Hammer was the vibe. It’s the kind of place where you can show up in jeans and a hoodie, or dressed to the nines for date night, and you’ll feel equally at home. Families, couples, groups of friends—everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves. There’s even outdoor seating for when the weather’s nice, complete with twinkling string lights that add a touch of magic.
Why You Need to Visit
Redmond might not be the first place that comes to mind when you think of must-visit foodie destinations, but Grace and Hammer is putting it on the map. This isn’t just a pizzeria—it’s an experience. The food is exceptional, the setting is unique, and the people are genuinely wonderful.
If you’re in the area—or even if you’re not—this is one spot worth going out of your way for. Whether you’re a die-hard pizza lover or just looking for a great meal in a memorable setting, Grace and Hammer delivers. And trust me, once you’ve had a slice, you’ll be planning your next visit before you’ve even left the table.
As I walked out of Grace and Hammer, my belly full and my heart happy, I couldn’t help but think about how special places like this are. It’s more than just the food (though the food is out-of-this-world good). It’s the care and creativity that go into every detail, from the way the pizzas are crafted to the way the old church has been given new life. Grace and Hammer is a testament to the idea that sometimes, when you mix a little history, a lot of passion, and a wood-fired oven, magic happens.
If you ever find yourself in Redmond, Oregon—or even if you’re just passing through on your way from Bend or Sunriver—do yourself a favor and stop by Grace and Hammer. Your taste buds will thank you, and so will your soul.
