If you’re dreaming of a cozy autumn getaway surrounded by crisp air and colorful leaves, you won’t have to travel far—Oregon has you covered. A new report from vacation rental company HomeToGo places two Oregon towns among the best destinations in the country for fall foliage.
National Recognition for Ashland and Hood River
The 2025 rankings analyzed 75 U.S. destinations, weighing factors like the cost of nearby vacation rentals, how well each location flies under the radar, the “scenic punch” of its landscapes, and the variety of trees and plants that put on a vibrant autumn display.
Ashland, in southern Oregon, soared to the #5 spot nationwide, earning high marks for affordability and accessibility. The report praised its “drivable access to forested hills” and described it as a quiet stronghold for fall color in the Pacific Northwest. With theater season in full swing and its charming downtown lined with cozy cafés, Ashland offers more than just pretty leaves—it’s an all-around fall experience.
Hood River, located in the Columbia River Gorge, came in at #16 overall. The town was recognized for its impressive diversity of tree species, which provide an especially colorful autumn backdrop. Beyond the leaves, Hood River is also known for its orchards, breweries, and breathtaking views of Mount Hood—making it a leaf-peeping paradise.
Who Took the Top Spot?
Ultimately, Harpers Ferry, West Virginia claimed the #1 ranking, praised for its affordability, hidden-gem appeal, and striking autumn scenery. Other towns in the top 10 included Ely, Minnesota; Brevard, North Carolina; and Manchester, Vermont.

What to Expect This Fall in Oregon
Most areas of the Pacific Northwest are expected to see a typical fall foliage season this year, according to AccuWeather. However, KOIN 6 Chief Meteorologist Josh Cozart notes that the timing will vary by elevation, with higher terrain starting to show color first.
AccuWeather’s Paul Pastelok warns that the peak window could be shorter than usual in 2025, meaning those hoping to catch the best displays shouldn’t delay their trips once the colors begin to change.
A Seasonal Invitation
Whether you’re wandering Ashland’s tree-lined streets or sipping cider in Hood River, Oregon continues to prove it’s one of the best states in the nation to celebrate fall. With two towns ranking in the national top 20, there’s never been a better reason to plan that autumn road trip.
