Study Confirms What We All Know, Oregon Drivers Really Are Some of the Worst

It's no secret that driving in Oregon can feel like navigating a real-life obstacle course, and now we have the data to back it up. According to a recent USA Today article based on a Forbes Advisor survey, Oregon ranks among the top five states with the worst drivers in the U.S. Is anyone truly surprised? I know I'm not. In fact, I could probably name a few extra behaviors that weren't even mentioned but should be.

The study analyzed 19 dangerous behaviors, including texting while driving, cutting off other motorists, eating while behind the wheel, and even applying makeup. But if you’ve spent enough time on Interstate 5 (I-5), you’ll know they left off a key Oregon driver specialty: camping out in the fast lane. I don’t know how many times I’ve seen drivers going a cool 50 mph in the left lane, completely oblivious to the miles of cars lining up behind them. And heaven forbid you give them a gentle honk or try to pass—they might just flip you off for your trouble.

Oregon drivers have an uncanny knack for rudeness, too. Whether they’re flipping you off because you merged in front of them (with plenty of space, mind you) or just because they didn’t like the way you looked that day, impatience is a common theme on these roads. And the way they treat roundabouts? Let’s just say it’s less 'yield' and more 'take a deep breath and hope for the best.'

While Oregon drivers made it into the top five, they weren’t crowned the absolute worst. Topping this list is none other than Hawaii. Yes, the Aloha State may be known for its beautiful beaches and laid-back vibe, but when it comes to driving, it's a whole other story. Hawaiian motorists have the dubious honor of running red lights, changing lanes or turning without signaling, and speeding over 20 mph above the limit. Apparently, even paradise isn’t immune to road rage and reckless driving.

While I love Oregon for its natural beauty and laid-back vibes, the driving habits here are a whole other story. I’ve driven in plenty of states, from the sprawling highways of Texas to the chaotic streets of Los Angeles, and I have to say, Oregon still takes the cake when it comes to bad drivers. Sure, other states have their own quirks, but the combination of slowpokes in the fast lane, aggressive gestures, and complete lack of awareness is what puts Oregon up there with New Mexico and the rest of the top offenders.

At the end of the day, I stand by this study. As much as I love my home state, the truth is in the data—and, unfortunately, in the everyday experience of driving here. So if you’re traveling through Oregon, buckle up, stay patient, and be prepared for those drivers who might cut you off, slam on their brakes for no reason, or tailgate you like it's an Olympic sport!
