A train trestle over the Marys River in Corvallis collapsed on Saturday afternoon, sending one train car carrying agricultural materials into the river and leaving two other cars unstable. The incident, which occurred at approximately 12:08 p.m., involved a 19-car freight train operated by Portland & Western Railroad (PNWR).

Initial investigations by the Corvallis Police Department revealed that the structural failure of the trestle led to the derailment. One train car ended up partially submerged in the Marys River, while two additional cars were precariously positioned, adding complexity to the recovery efforts. Fortunately, no injuries have been reported.

Emergency response teams, including the Corvallis Fire Department and ecological recovery specialists from Northwest Firefighters, quickly arrived at the scene. Their immediate focus has been on stabilizing the situation, ensuring public safety, and mitigating any potential environmental impact. Containment booms have been deployed in the Marys River to filter and contain any materials that may have leaked from the derailed car.

“For the safety of emergency responders, recovery teams, and all personnel involved, we ask the public to avoid the area. Please follow all roadblocks, detours, and directions from local authorities as recovery efforts continue,” Corvallis Police stated in an official release.

Environmental agencies and first responders are working collaboratively to address the incident. Portland & Western Railroad is cooperating fully with authorities and has committed to minimizing the environmental impact and ensuring the safe recovery of all train cars.

Photos from the scene show the train car partially submerged in the Marys River, with emergency crews assessing the damage and securing the area. As efforts to recover the derailed cars and repair the damaged trestle progress, officials have assured the public that updates will be provided as more information becomes available.

This is a developing story, and further details will be shared as investigations and recovery efforts unfold.
