UNITED STATES — In a stunning revelation that rocked suburban malls across America, thousands of teens born after 2005 were reportedly shocked to discover that Nirvana is not, in fact, a clothing brand exclusively sold at Hot Topic.
“I just thought it was like Vans or Thrasher or something,” said 16-year-old Kayla Martinez, adjusting her distressed Nirvana hoodie while sipping a pink Starbucks drink. “I didn’t know it was like…a real band? With songs? That’s so vintage.”
The confusion came to a head after Spotify’s algorithm randomly played "Smells Like Teen Spirit," prompting a wave of TikTok searches for “Nirvana band??” and “Kurt Cobain was a person?”
“I always thought Kurt Cobain was a model,” one user commented beneath a video with 4.2 million views. “Like the mascot guy for grunge-core.”
In response to the mix-up, Hot Topic issued a statement clarifying that while they do sell Nirvana merchandise, they were not responsible for founding the band in 1987. “We simply profit from their pain,” the press release read.
Meanwhile, classic rock dads everywhere reportedly felt a small glimmer of hope, followed by crushing despair upon realizing no one wants to hear them talk about In Utero for the eighth time at dinner.
At press time, several of the teens had reportedly begun listening to Nirvana “ironically,” before accidentally experiencing emotion for the first time.
