Newport Resident Shoots and Kills Attacker Who Was Stabbing Another Man on Front Porch

In the early hours of Friday morning, a quiet Newport neighborhood became the latest reminder of how quickly random violence can erupt in Oregon, even on an ordinary front porch.

Just before 1 a.m., police were called to a home on Northwest Grove Street after a resident reported someone aggressively pounding on the door. What happened next was not a dispute, an argument, or a misunderstanding — it was immediate violence.

According to investigators, when the resident opened the door, he was confronted with a man actively stabbing another person on the front porch. There was no pause, no warning, and no sign the attack was slowing down.

Police say the resident retreated inside, retrieved a handgun, and called 911. He then returned outside and demanded the attacker stop. When the stabbing continued, the resident fired his weapon, killing the attacker at the scene.

First responders later confirmed the stabbing suspect died on the porch. The victim who had been stabbed was rushed to a hospital and later transferred to a Portland-area emergency room, where he remains in critical condition.

Only minutes later, the situation widened.

While officers from the Newport Police Department and deputies with the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office were investigating the first scene, they were led to a second location just blocks away near Highway 101 and Northwest 19th Street. There, they found another man who had been stabbed to death.

Investigators believe the incidents are connected, though they have not said whether the suspect or victims knew one another.

The case is now being handled by the Lincoln County Major Crime Team. Authorities say there is no ongoing threat to the public and have not announced any charges related to the resident who fired the fatal shot.

While the investigation continues, the circumstances raise a sobering question many Oregonians are quietly asking more often lately: what happens when random violence shows up uninvited?

Based on what police have shared so far, it appears the man who opened his door that night may have stopped a brutal attack already in progress — and likely prevented a far worse outcome. Had the stabbing continued uninterrupted, there is little indication it would have ended without another death.

For many residents, the incident underscores a growing unease across the state. Violent encounters that once seemed distant or rare are increasingly unfolding in everyday places — front porches, sidewalks, and neighborhoods where people expect safety, not survival decisions.

Incidents like this also underscore the role firearms can play when violence unfolds in seconds. In situations where an attack is already in progress, there is often no time to wait for police to arrive. The ability to immediately confront and stop a violent assailant can mean the difference between life and death. Based on what investigators have said so far, it appears the resident’s use of a firearm ended the stabbing and very likely saved the victim’s life.

Police have not said whether the resident will face charges, and no conclusions have been drawn. What is clear is that in a matter of moments, a routine night turned into a life-or-death confrontation — one that left two people dead, one fighting for his life, and a community grappling with how commonplace this kind of violence is starting to feel.

Anyone with information related to the case is urged to contact Newport police.
